We knew that some of the windows were leaking and needed to be replaced. We had no idea the extent of the damage to the house,” Joanne explained. “The whole project has snowballed.” To repair and refurbish their home, the Lehmans hired Lowcountry Contractors. An aluminum roof, new stucco walls and new doors and windows would add to its charm once the home was completed. Owner Jeremy Blackstock explained, “it’s a beautiful piece of property, but it needed some love.” “We work on termite-damaged homes all the time, and we actually work with entomologists in the area that have done a great job of training our staff, so we know what to do and what to look for. We have made it key to not just fix termite damage, but to work with people who know what they’re doing so we don’t make mistakes while we’re doing it,” he added. Jeremy Willis, assistant project manager at Lowcountry Contractors, explained that the house’s major issues are water and termite damage, window replacements and stucco repair. Willis said, “The front wall and the back wall had to be completely rebuilt because of water damage. The roof had to be replaced because of water damage, so it’ll have all-new bluish-green stucco. We are adding all-new hardwood floors and redone bathrooms, and we will redo the carpet as well.” Although the Lehmans are preserving most of the interior design, the bathrooms needed a facelift. 163 www. VOICE forRea l Es tate. com | www. TopTenHomesSo l d. com | www.MountPl easantAgent s . com Although they knew that their new home would need a few interior touchups, it came as a complete surprise when they discovered the extensive damage to the home. According to Jeremy Willis, project manager at Lowcountry Contractors, the bones of the house are in good shape. However, there was significant water damage throughout the house. The stucco covering the exterior of the house also had to be replaced, and none of the windows were strong enough to protect against South Carolina’s intense coastal weather. But the biggest issue, however, was what Lowcountry Contractors found within the walls of the home: termites. Jeremy Blackstock, the owner of Lowcountry Contractors, said that, “We work on termite-damaged homes all the time. It’s very common for the area.” Lowcountry Contractors works with entomologists to study and perfect methods of eradicating and repairing termite damage to ensure their clients have the highest quality service. For several months now, Lowcountry Contractors has been hard at work simultaneously correcting the structural damage and creating a new, modern interior while still preserving the charm of the original design. Interior designer Katherine Brickell has been working with the Lehmans to refurbish their home within budget. According to Blackstock, “the home hadn’t been updated since it was originally built, but the Lehmans are doing some really nice upgrades to the property. I think it’s going to be one of the most beautiful homes on the Isle of Palms once it’s complete.” Halfway through the renovation, the Lehman’s vision is starting to come to life. Modern gold light fixtures and bright white walls and counters refresh the original layout, making it both functional and stylish. The most noticeable change, however, is the color of the home. For years, the exterior was sage green, but after Lowcountry Contractors noticed cracks in the stucco, the Lehmans opted to replace it. Now, the home is covered in an eye-catching bluish green stucco, matching the ocean views behind it. “The neatest thing about it is the lot. The lot has incredible views. When you take a house like this and completely redo it, it’s going to be one of the best,” said Blackstock. 131 www. ReadMPM. com | www.MountPl easantMagaz i ne. com | www.MountPl easantPodcas t . com Point Drive, they knew it needed some TLC. They planned for a few important updates, but the magnitude of water and termite damage they found was more than they had bargained for. Thankfully, Lowcountry Contractors had prepared them for worstcase scenarios such as this. “We make sure clients understand that when you go opening up walls there’s no telling what you’ll find,” said Jeremy Willis, project manager. “The Lehmans have been very understanding and wonderful to work with,” he added. In the Charleston area, termites can be very intrusive, but the Lehmans can breathe a sigh of relief now that the infestation has been eradicated. Almost the entire house has new drywall and paint thanks to the termite damage. The exterior structure had to be entirely reframed, and Lowcountry Contractors restored the architectural integrity of the home with new stucco, which was blended with paint before being applied, a process that can help keep the paint looking fresh for up to 30 years. Many of the improvements made to the home were made with the local climate as well as the Lehman’s lifestyle in mind. The Lowcountry Contractors team brainstormed ways to improve the home with solutions that would prevent the Lehmans from having to address more concerns in the future. Materials and finishes were chosen specifically to suit the home’s location and style, maximize the lot’s gorgeous views and bring the couple’s vision to life. In addition to new walls, the home boasts new hurricane impact windows, a new aluminum roof — which holds up better in a coastal climate — and a stunning custom iron front door. “New composite railings and decks grace the entire exterior and, in the interior, there are wide-plank engineered white oak hardwood floors with a natural finish to bring out the beauty of the wood,” said Nihad Abdin, also a manager on the project. What started as a mostly exterior endeavor evolved into a huge transformation, both inside and outside the home. The renovation grew to include four bathrooms, which were remodeled with light colors, new frameless shower enclosures and expertly-selected fixtures. Lowcountry Contractors’ director of interior design, Katherine Brickell, worked closely with the Lehmans to give them the modern spa-like feel they were going for. “The owners wanted to create a space that was light and bright, a relaxing retreat after a day at the beach. The fixtures lean modern with clean lines and contrast beautifully with the large format stone-inspired tile. There is a cohesion between all of the bathrooms, but each of them has unique elements designed for beauty and function,” said Brickell. “The project keeps getting bigger,” said Jeremy Blackstock, owner of Lowcountry Contractors. “The home is absolutely stunning, and the Lehmans were the perfect family to take on this extraordinary project. They preserved the architectural details of the home but upgraded it to today’s style and standards.” Blackstock also referred to the renovated property as the premier home on the Isle of Palms. “For us to be able to participate in this project is what makes this work so fun. The final product is what I imagine the original architect intended when the home was first built.” Preserving the charm of the original home while correcting all damage was central to the project. Everyone involved — from Lowcountry Contractors’ area and regional managers, project and assistant project managers to their support staff in the office — worked together with the Lehmans to bring the property back to its original splendor with long-lasting modern touches. Bill and Joanne Lehman along with their children and grandchildren look forward to enjoying the home and its picturesque setting for decades to come. feature SOUTHERN LUMBER 2031 King Street Ext Charleston, SC 29405 843-744-6281 GARDEN STATE TILE 519 East Bay Street Charleston, SC 29403 843-872-3766 RICHARDS SUPPLY 3128 Benchmark Drive Ladson, SC 29456 FERGUSON 4711 Rivers Avenue North Charleston, SC 29405 843-460-1769 84 LUMBER 704 Johnnie Dodds Blvd. Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 843-884-8431 GRANITE BY DESIGN 108 Thomas Cary Court Charleston, SC 29492 843-416-8509 PALMETTO SURFACING 7645 Southrail Road North Charleston, SC 29420 843-569-1131 Home Renovation Vendor List The project team for 57 Ocean Point. 3 Lowcount r y Cont rac tor s | 1204 Pa lm B l vd Su i te E | I s l e of Pa lms , SC 29451 | O: ( 843 ) 242-8838 | L wcount r yCont rac tor s . com

BESTOFMP.COM For essential businesses such as Lowcountry Contractors, work has not just held steady but actually grown in the past several months. After a short closure to regroup and set new COVID-19 safety protocols, Jeremy Blackstock’s company reopened to respond to increasing requests for remodels, repairs and building projects. Blackstock credits his healthy workload to the fact that families spending more time at home have become increasingly aware of and dissatisfied with their personal spaces. They want added comfort and designs that better reflect their tastes. Home projects, once casually relegated to a future date, now seem more necessary. For some families, there is also more money in the budget to dedicate to these projects. “Some have used their stimulus checks; some have borrowed from vacation money; and many have taken advantage of low interest rates and cash-out financing,” Blackstock explained. As winners of the Best Home Improvement and Remodeling, Best House Painter and one of the Best Interior Decorators, this business has become known as a full-service shop for building projects. According to Blackstock, “Kitchens and baths are frequent remodeling projects. Some folks want bigger backyards, and some need spaces converted or added for home offices. Others decide this is the perfect time to replace windows or siding, or they want a new roof.” “Although 70 to 80% of our clients here are local, we use software programs that allow all our customers, near and far, to see the progress of their projects daily. They have access to updates, schedules and even weather forecasts, as well as progress notes and concerns. Great communication is definitely a major key to our clients’ happiness and our success,” he said. The use of technology has been welcomed by both customers and employees because it lessens the need for face-to-face contact. At least 50% of sales calls are conducted through Zoom meetings. In-person meetings are often held outside with social distancing. Blackstock uses 3D models, and, before signing a project contract, he encourages clients to put on virtual-reality glasses to experience their finished space or project. Virtual openings have also been highly successful. In keeping with COVID-19 guidelines, masks, shoe coverings and gloves are worn indoors at job sites. As an extra precaution, where possible, temporary walls are constructed to literally “wall off” the project from the rest of the family living space. Finally, the home is completely disinfected before being returned to the family. Blackstock credits the lifelong relationships he has built with his loyal customers for the growth of Lowcountry Contractors. “Everyone on our team is local – we know each other, and we know our customers – and we all feel really blessed to be part of the Mount Pleasant Community,” he said. VOICE forRea l Es tate. com 12 CW: When did you decide to go into the business you are in? “I have been involved with real estate and development alongside my husband since the 90s. It wasn’t until my four daughters were older that I decided to finally pursue real estate full-time.” CW: How do you find your passion? “Real estate is an emotional business. There is nothing more passionate to me than witnessing the joy homeowners experience when closing on their new home. Knowing I played a small part in their happiness is fulfilling.” CW: What habits do you implement in dayto-day life that you attribute to success? “As a former Division I basketball player, I learned the value of organization and structure. I have created daily habits that provide structure and keep me organized in real estate.” CW: What things do you find difficult? “There is a very limited supply of homes for sale in today’s market. Most homeowners are unaware of how prepared they need to be when house hunting. It can be difficult convincing the traditional homebuyer that ‘window shopping’ in real estate does not exist in this current market. Knowing what you want and moving fast will get you the best deal and oftentimes avoid a ‘multiple offers’ situation.” CW: Tell us about how you grew up and what or who shaped you into the woman you are today. “I grew up in Roanoke, Virginia with a fun loving and athletic family. My parents and coaches along the way have definitely shaped me into who I am today. I am grateful for my parents’ love and support growing up and for the coaches that taught me life lessons.” CW: Tell us about your family. “I’ve been married to Jeremy Blackstock, owner of Lowcountry Contractors, for 23 years. We have lived in Mount Pleasant for most of our adult lives and have four beautiful and athletic daughters. Kendra is in medical school and a former four-time all-American lacrosse player; Skylar is a senior basketball player at Clemson University; Alexandra is a Wando High School volleyball player; and Langdon is a Cario volleyball player.” CW: Give us some success tips for someone just starting out in your line of work. “There aren’t any dumb questions. Don’t be afraid or too proud to ask questions. You don’t know what you don’t know. Find a mentor. Having a mentor shortens the learning curve drastically and will make you a successful Realtor a lot faster. I love helping new Realtors get started in real estate.” Patti Blackstock Keller Williams 1204 Palm Blvd., Ste.
