Adhering to the wisdom of my fellow Citadel graduate who was one of South Carolina’s most successful politicians, it was the only way to run. I was a sitting Mount Pleasant town councilman and decided to challenge the incumbent mayor, so running unopposed wasn’t an option. Nor was failure. No one runs for office because they want to lose. As with other major events in a person’s life, like getting married, starting a family, starting a business or setting out on a big adventure, there is usually a sense of inner timing, call it intuition, that lets you know when the time is right. After discussing the possibility of running for mayor with my wife, Suzette, we knew it was time. We made the decision in the fall of 2016 and never looked back, though the election was a year away.
