C O M “W hat’s in a name?” the Bard wrote in “Romeo and Juliet.” Though Shakespeare’s point was that a name alone is meaningless, in 2021, one modern dental practice has proven year after year that a name can tell a powerful story. More than 30 years ago, two young dentists, Dr. Richard Jackowski and Dr. Gregory Johnson, launched their practice. They named it Pleasant Family Dentistry to highlight what they hoped would become their hallmarks: empathetic service for patients of all ages, from toddlers to seniors, and a commitment to removing the anxiety and pain from first-rate dental and oral care. Clearly, they succeeded in the ambitious promise of their practice’s fortuitous name. Pleasant Family Dentistry has been named one of the Best Dentists in East Cooper by readers so often that they’ve just about retired the trophy. And who better to tell the story behind how Pleasant Family Dentistry has lived up to its lofty goals than the patients served and the staff who make it all possible? One patient who suffered a broken crown said he “dreaded what experience had taught me would be a seven-to-ten-day process, with a temporary crown and all that it entails.” Yet, he was astonished by the smooth, painless process at Pleasant Family Dentistry. “I was told I could go back the same day to get the crown made and permanently placed. Start to finish, this was the most responsive, professional and gentle dental experience I have ever had.” Another patient proclaimed, “I was seen on short notice for an emergency. After an x-ray and a complimentary exam, I received a referral to a specialist.” And a host of others have posted other positive reviews, from, “thorough and professional” to “accommodating and technology-driven” to “their dental work is exceptional” to perhaps the most telling accolade of all, “everyone was friendly, and I was seen on time!” But what about the hard-working staff? Take it from hygienist Jillian Clark, who said, “my ideas and expertise as a hygienist are valued.” According to Clark, the focus of everyone at the practice — from the dentists themselves to the back office staff — assures that all patients “have great oral health, and if problems arise, we are there for them.” In one place and at one time, the dentists and staff do it all: cavity detection, root canals, restorations, implants, Invisalign braces, bleaching and veneers. And, as an adjunct to this superior general dentistry, they also offer services such as Botox and dermal fillers. In fact, one word that recurs in describing Pleasant Family Dentistry is “comprehensive.” A final key to success, particularly for patients who may have had prior painful experiences, is the offer of sedation dentistry, utilizing nitrous oxide or oral medication. While Shakespeare himself didn’t invent the adjective “toothsome,” he might well have applied it to this beloved East Cooper dentistry. That’s because the word means agreeable, attractive or, well, pleasant. And in this instance, the term would seem extraordinarily appropriate.
