The new year brings resolutions and resets coupled with the desire for a real-life approach to developing healthier habits. When the internet is swarming with diet noise and chaos, it’s time to find some strategies that actually work. We spoke with Mount Pleasant resident Lori D’Amato MS, RDN, LDN and founder of Food and Wellness (FoodandWellness.com), who is passionate about healing our bodies through food. She shared simple, everyday tips and offered a reminder to focus on the things that our bodies truly need. THREE EVERYDAY HABITS THAT CHANGE EVERYTHING 1. Start the morning with balance Most of us start our day by heading straight to the coffee pot. D’Amato challenged us to rethink this daily choice. “Most people begin their day with caffeine on an empty stomach, which can spike cortisol and set up cravings later.” Instead, we should pick up something that stabilizes blood sugar first: protein shake, chia pudding or eggs and berries. “When your blood sugar is steady early, hunger, mood and digestion fall into place much more easily,” commented D’Amato. 2. The power of a “default plate” If we’re being honest, I think we’d all agree that busyness is often our excuse for the way we eat and not the lack of knowledge to make healthy choices.
