Their doughnuts are made hot and fresh while you wait, and you choose from dozens of glazes and toppings to make a doughnut just the way you want it. If you’re the type that gets overwhelmed with too many choices, Fractured Prune makes it easy. They picked some of the most popular, tasty combinations just for you. Try the O.C. Sand dripping with honey glaze and topped with cinnamon sugar or Death by Chocolate smothered in chocolate glaze, chocolate sprinkles and cookie crumbs. Where did the funky Fractured Prune name come from? It’s from a spunky woman named Prunella Shriek who was a legend in Ocean City, Maryland, home of the first Fractured Prune. She was nicknamed “Fractured Prune” after competing in traditionally men’s sports well into her 70s and winning — but always hurting herself. The founder of this unique little shop thought the name was perfect. The original store opened in 1976 and is one of the first hot-and-fresh made-to-order doughnut stores in the country. The Vola family opened the Mount Pleasant shop last October. While Mr. and Mrs. Vola both have full-time professions, a specially trained staff runs the store on their behalf. “I grew up going to the Fractured Prune at the Delaware and Maryland beaches,” said Mrs. Vola. “It was my go-to place. Since I was a girl, I dreamed of opening one. There is no other doughnut experience like this. The Fractured Prune is a fun, family experience, especially in the summer after a day at the beach. It’s a cult classic in Maryland. We want to create the same type of nostalgic memories here.” In addition to made-to-order hot doughnuts, the store offers soft-serve ice cream with all the glaze and topping choices, gourmet coffee and soft drinks. Looking for a unique party idea? What about a make-your-own-doughnut party? Celebrate a birthday, baby shower, sports team or gender-reveal party in your own private room at Fractured Prune. The spacious room includes a large chalkboard, giant Connect Four, games, toys, books and music. The Volas are promoters of environmental, sea-turtle and animal conservation. They don’t serve plastic, they display environmental awareness posters and they have donated over $1,300 to the HF Foundation, which helped place 12 rescue dogs. In addition, Mrs. Vola is a member of the Island Turtle Team. Fractured Prune also honors first responders, firemen, policemen, schools and churches by offering discounted prices.
