During my publishing career I’ve had some pinnacle moments and events that have led to publishing adventures that I hold close to my heart. One such event happened 30 years ago when Hurricane Hugo’s horrific winds pounded the South Carolina shoreline. Documenting Hugo in an historic keepsake publication, “Hurricane Hugo — Storm of the Century” was a once-in-a-lifetime publishing experience. The devastation Hurricane Hugo caused and telling the stories of the survivors and heroes that stood in its path is part of the reason that publication means so much to me. But when Robert Sheets, director of the National Hurricane Center, said to me, “Bill, you saved lives by publishing “Storm of the Century,” I asked him what he meant. He explained that when people read the firsthand accounts of Hugo survivors, people in the path of future hurricanes will respond in a positive way when they hear hurricane warnings. It’s a powerful statement when anyone says you helped to save lives — especially the director of the National Hurricane Center.
