Hazel: I was a 3-month-old, cute little nugget! River: I am not sure how old I was. I am an older girl who lived a whole life before I was adopted, but it was two years ago when I met my soul family, as I like to say. WERE YOU EVER A STRAY, OR WERE YOU AN OWNER SURRENDER? Simon: I was found on the side of a highway before the awesome people at Carolina Coonhound Rescue found me. I belonged to a hunter who was not very nice to me. I can’t remember if I ran away because things got so bad or if I was left in the woods and found my way to the main road. Hazel: The wonderful people at Carolina Pyr Rescue found and saved my dog-ma when my siblings and I were still in her belly. As soon as I was ready for a family, I became a Felber. My new human mom always loved my breed, Great Pyrenees, and she always says how beautiful I am and how much I remind her of her first baby, Monty, who now lives somewhere over a rainbow bridge I hear humans talk about from time to time. River: My first daddy surrendered me to a kill shelter when he lost his house and couldn’t keep me any longer. I don’t think he knew they’d eventually kill me; most people don’t realize some shelters do that. Thankfully, the good people at Palmetto Paws Rescue found me waiting, gave me a bath, cleaned my teeth and made me really happy! They promised they’d find me a new daddy. … And they sure did — along with a whole family! HOW IS YOUR HEALTH? We are all healthy! YOU HAVE SOME HUMAN SIBLINGS. WAS THAT A TOUGH ADJUSTMENT FOR YOU? Simon: I love my people, especially my boy, Dylan. He snuggles with me and chases me around — and I like to run! It was harder for me to adjust to these fur sisters. When I was first adopted, I lived with my older fur brother, Monty. He looked like a giant, white, boy version of Hazel. I loved him a lot and looked up to him to teach me how to behave inside of a house, since it was my first time. He was the best! But he had to leave us unexpectedly to head across the rainbow bridge, so I was left to be the only furry guy in the house. I didn’t like that very much, so, pretty soon, puppy Hazel joined the pack! It was hard for me to be the big brother and be the one that Hazel was learning from at first, but, now, she is bigger than me and is very bossy. So, it’s perfect. Hazel: I love, love, love my human siblings. They feed me and snuggle with me all of the time. What’s better than that? I agree with Simon; it was harder for me to adjust to having a new fur sister. I have to share my snuggles and my treats with River, and that took a bit of adjustment. River: I love everyone, furry or human, but my human sis- ter, Ailey, has my heart. She is the one that saw me and took me in to her house and begged her parents to keep me even though they already had a full house. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO IN LIFE? Simon: I love to go for walks, sneak out and go for a good run around the neighborhood, and then snuggle with my favorite Carolina blanket — and my people. SIMON HAZEL RIVER
