Established in 1937, our K-8 campus benefits from being situated in the heart of historic Charleston. This unique location allows CDS students and teachers to move beyond the gates of the school and use the city of Charleston as an extended classroom. Having a student body of just over 250 students allows for each member of the school community and its faculty and students to personally know one another and build meaningful relationships. Our small classes allow students to find their voice, take intellectual risks, develop confidence and shape their identities as individuals. The mission of CDS is to foster scholarship, integrity, respect and responsibility in our students. This straightforward mission provides direction for each member of the school community and reminds us that academic development is as important as the formation of character and integrity in our youngest generation. We take our mission seriously, and it guides our daily instruction. Our interdisciplinary curriculum and strong partnerships within the Charleston community expose students to modern languages, public speaking, science, technology and performing/visual arts beginning with our youngest students in kindergarten. Our eighth graders have many options for secondary school placement, including competitive magnet schools, local independent high schools and nationally ranked boarding schools.
