She came on board a few days early, on the previous Friday, when the town’s Emergency Operations Center was activated with the arrival of Hurricane Irma. Knight, a native Texan and an Air Force veteran, earned her undergraduate degree in health care management at Park University and her graduate degree in emergency management at GeorgeWashington University in the nation’s capital. She got her first up-close look at natural hazards when she was forecasting weather for the Air Force, and, beginning in 2012, worked in emergency management at the Medical University of South Carolina. From there she moved on to DHEC, where she worked in emergency preparedness in the agency’s Lowcountry region, helping health care entities in 11 counties prepare for and deal with emergencies. Her next stop was Mount Pleasant. Knight, 34 and a resident of Park Circle in North Charleston, said she got into emergency management “because I realized someone had to organize that chaos.” be faced with a similar situation that was real instead of simulated, he responded: “I hope not. But we have to be prepared.” Back at Town Hall in the EOC, Mount Pleasant employees were practicing for a disaster that might or might not come. The exercise was a worthwhile endeavor, according to Town Administrator Eric DeMoura. “This exposes us as an organization in a good way,” said DeMoura. “It would be a mistake if we didn’t find out where we are weak. It’s a challenge for everyone to find out not what our capabilities are but what they aren’t.” At Brightway, we know one size doesn’t fit all.
