Though Von Kolnitz, Irwin, and many other charter captains in the area decided to postpone the beginning of the season, as the calendar turned toward summer, things started to change. The stay-at-home order was lifted in early May, and the weather began to get even more glorious. Despite the virus still being a threat, many people are deciding to enjoy life outside of their homes, within reason. “Being on the water for fishing or just a boat ride is a change of pace,” Von Kolnitz commented. Irwin said he is not surprised how many people have recently turned to fishing charters for a fun, socially distanced outing. “They just went crazy!” he marveled. “After all that time cooped up, I noticed a huge uptick in business over the last couple of months. I just think people love to be out and about — and what is better than being out in the open water, breathing in that salt air?” Although business is not quite where it has been in years past, both Von Kolnitz and Irwin said they expect the comeback to be led by past clients, friends and locals.
