11 www. ReadMPM. com | www.MountPl easantMagaz i ne. com | www.MountPl easantPodcas t . com It was 1980 and the population was about 3,400. It was probably one of the safest, if not the safest, places to live in the Charleston area, which was important to me because I was a single dad raising my son Drew. It was a beautiful time on the Isle of Palms. When we decided this issue of Mount Pleasant Magazine would feature the islands, it brought back fond memories of when Drew and I called Isle of Palms home. It was during that time I started to understand what makes the small patch of sand so special. The island is a wonderful place with a rich past that makes for great articles — ones like the piece on The Hunley, starting on page 27. The Hunley was launched from Breach Inlet, which is why the bridge that connects Sullivan’s Island to Isle of Palms is officially called The H.L. Hunley Bridge. You’ll also find an article on Isle of Palms’ first female mayor, Carmen Bunch, on page 25. You can then take a tour of an extensively remodeled island home as you flip to page 34. Moving onto page 41, there’s an article on the new Isle of Palms Chamber of Commerce, followed by a look at a new watering hole at the Wild Dunes Resort on page 46. We’ve spent a lot of time writing about these beloved islands. I believe the most extensive online collections of islands history articles on Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island are found at IsleofPalmsMagazine.com and SullivansIslandMagazine.com. While you’re visiting the digital versions of our island magazines, check out our island-focused podcasts. Listen to or watch recent podcast interviews with the current Isle of Palms mayor, Phillip Pounds, and past mayor, Jimmy Carroll. Also find an interview on Lowcountry Live with Katrina Limbach, the president of the new island chamber. For all podcast or Lowcountry Live segments that have an island focus visit IsleofPalmsPodcast.com. I can’t leave you without also giving a big shout out to the South Carolina women who came to our photo shoot at Boone Hall Plantation. We had a blast photographing these ladies for South Carolina Women in Real Estate and Charleston Women magazines. These women display levels of strength that makes the world a better place. 13 www. ReadMPM. com | www.MountPl easantMagaz i ne. com | www.MountPl easantPodcas t . com editor’s note This issue of Mount Pleasant Magazine highlights the Isle of Palms and the amazing women of the Lowcountry. Ask anyone who knows me; celebrating women and lounging around the beach are two of my favorite things in life. I spent two years writing a blog about women while living by the ocean before my daughter was born. That made this one extra special. One of my favorite stories focuses on the renovation of the Culp home on IOP. I like that the project is not only beautiful, but that it also took a lot of work. My husband and I both come from salt-of-the-earth families in Appalachia. We grew up having to fight for what we got, and have appreciated our accomplishments so much because of it. When blood, sweat and tears go into a project, it makes it that much sweeter. This article shows that great things take time and is also inspiring for anyone wanting to do their own renovations. Plus, it is just downright gorgeous, and will give readers all the island feels. I can smell salt and coconut oil just thinking about it. One of the homeowners, Holly Culp, is also one of our women featured for her efforts in real estate. This issue highlights many women in various businesses who are showing us all what it means to be a girl boss. One business owner showed up eight months pregnant to our Charleston Women photoshoot, struggling through the heat and demands of work and family to represent women conquering their dreams on our pages. I. Freaking. Loved. That. I am inspired by the women in these pages more than they know. I edit the stories about them that come across my desk, and they make me feel motivated to do more. This isn’t just a job for me; it’s a chance to be a part of something so much bigger than myself. It’s the chance to lead a movement sweeping the area. I stand with the females you’ll read about, clanking my mimosa glass against theirs, to show what it means when we proudly declare, “We are Charleston Women.” -Lorna Hollifield Managing Editor SCAN • CLICK SUBSCRIBE YOUR COMMUNITY, YOUR MAGAZINE JULY/AUGUST 2022 C A L E N D A R O F E V E N T S • I S L A N D E D I T I O N • C H A R L E S T O N W O M E N Hurricane Hugo Remembering the Survivors The Hottest Summer Activities In and Out of theWater
14 www. ReadMPM. com | www.MountPl easantMagaz i ne. com | www.MountPl easantPodcas t . com about the cover The island issue is always something to look forward to at Mount Pleasant Magazine because of what it represents. Tourists and new residents flock to this area, in large part, because of the beauty that the sea islands and waterways offer. It is a lifestyle. It only takes one picture to release the smell of daiquiris, to transport overworked feet onto the sand or to deliver a breath of salty air straight to the lungs. The breathtaking aerial view on the cover, provided by the Wild Dunes Resort on Isle of Palms, captures in entirety, the artistry of the unique Lowcountry coastline. It evokes emotion and draws human beings that are high on life by the droves. There aren’t enough words available to convey what that piece of photography can by simply showing what the island is—a true gift from nature. Views like the one on the cover can be discovered from restaurants like The Nest inside Wild Dunes. Read more about this new nod to the island’s glory days on page 46. There are also countless activities available to connect with the different offerings along the shore, both in and out of the water. Check out the article on page 31 to discover how to experience the beach, ocean or marsh your way. We are excited to have you read along and explore with us! 17 www. ReadMPM. com | www.MountPl easantMagaz i ne. com | www.MountPl easantPodcas t . com social buzz July is a month in which we celebrate America. We honor those who gave everything to secure our freedoms, and that extends beyond just celebrating our independence on the fourth. We celebrate things true to America like freedom of speech, freedom of religion and the idea of “the American dream.” You know what else is a true American staple? That’s right, it’s good ol’ mac n’ cheese. We took to Instagram to find out our readers’ favorite recipes and got a winner. Make Hope and Daniel Singletary’s mouth-watering dish July 14 to celebrate National Mac and Cheese Day! DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, set up ice bath with 4 cups of water and 4 cups of ice cubes. Set aside. Combine 8 cups of water and kosher salt in pot. Bring to boil. Add macaroni and cook four minutes. Drain pasta in colander, then pour into ice bath to “shock.”Drain well. In a small pot, combine soup, cream, milk and butter. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. Whisk in 3 cups of cheddar cheese. Season mixture with table salt and pepper. Remove from heat. In a large bowl, combine cheese sauce with drained noodles and mix. Transfer the noodle mixture to a two-quart baking dish. Top with remaining cheddar. Transfer to oven and bake for 20 minutes. Let cool and serve. 25 www. ReadMPM. com | www.MountPl easantMagaz i ne. com | www.MountPl easantPodcas t . com In August 1920, a baby girl was born in Brooklyn just days before women were given the right to vote. This proved to be quite the coincidence, since she would grow up to become the first female mayor of a small Southern beach town, the Isle of Palms. Like many women of her time, Carmen Ramirez worked as a typist when she finished high school. However, unlike most women, she joined the U.S. Navy during World War II, despite her parents’ wishes. Since she could speak three languages, the Navy put Ramirez to work interpreting and translating communications between Allied Forces. While stationed in Norfolk, Ramirez met another sailor, Jack Bunch, whom she would marry. After the war, the couple moved to the Isle of Palms, Jack’s hometown, and ran his family’s restaurant at Breach Inlet. Carmen Bunch found that moving to a small community of 300 people was a huge adjustment, but the new bride eventually settled in and became friends with islanders who frequented the family’s restaurant. The Bunches were able to use the GI Bill to purchase two lots on 17th Avenue and build the house where they raised their two children. In 1950, the couple left the restaurant business and went to work at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. Bunch soon became interested in civic affairs and she began attending city council meetings. She ran for mayor in 1981, two years after her husband’s death, but lost to the incumbent. However, after serving four years on the city council, she won the next mayoral election in 1985. So began Bunch’s 16-year tenure as the island’s only female mayor. Bunch’s leadership skills were put to the test when Hurricane Hugo blasted the island in 1989. The devastation was widespread, with 95% of the homes on the island destroyed or rendered unsafe. Roads were impassible, leaving the island unreachable by vehicle. Bunch had concerns that looters would still be able to make their way onto the island, so with the approval of Governor Carroll Campbell, martial law was imposed. This allows only civil authorities to enter the island. This also meant anyone who had evacuated before the storm was not able to return, even full-time residents. The decision caused anger and frustration among many property owners who were anxious to assess the damage. Some also questioned whether it was the best move for Bunch’s political future. Regardless, Bunch was determined that it was the right thing to do, and despite the swell of controversy surrounding her, she was re-elected. After serving four consecutive terms, Bunch contemplated one more run for mayor at 81, but decided against it. She retired in 2002. In 2004 she was among the veterans present when the World War II monument was dedicated in Washington, DC. She passed in 2014. In 2013, the city council purchased a lot next to the Island Center to be used as a public park. It was named in honor of the woman who created many waves on Isle of Palms — the largest of which barreled directly through the glass ceiling. George Dixon. Dixon was the commanding officer of the H.L. Hunley, the Confederate submarine whose base of operations was at Breach Inlet in 1864. The crew that worked on the submarine was based in Mount Pleasant. Including Dixon, the crew of eight traveled mainly by foot to work each day. These men worked extremely long hours and were required to be in great physical condition. They would be turning a crank to propel the craft for hours, moving through several miles of ocean currents to reach their target. Because the Union Blockade was set up at the mouth of the harbor, the Hunley ended up deploying directly from Sullivan’s Island. They decided to attack the outermost vessels where they were least expected and go inward toward the center from there. This was the best strategy because they were at less risk of being picked off by Union fire. This also helped keep the submarine away from the civilians on the north end of Sullivan’s Island. In January of 1864, the submarine was moved to Breach Battery from a dock in Mount Pleasant. The view of their position was perfect. They were able to easily see the Union ships that were anchored four miles off the beach. They had a feature

29 www. ReadMPM. com | www.MountPl easantMagaz i ne. com | www.MountPl easantPodcas t . com straight shot. The Hunley deployed at night so they were not easily seen, and so the lights from the Union ships were able to act as perfect guides for the small sub to reach its target. The crew took weeks to prepare for this journey. Most practice maneuvers were done in Cove Creek, where five nights per week they would mimic diving and surfacing. Calm nights with an outgoing tide and smooth waters were best for drills at sea, but during the Charleston winter, the waters were unpredictable. While preparing for the attack, the Hunley was docked for two weeks because of heavy fog and rough water conditions. The men had many issues to work out, like getting back to the island if they left the port while the tide was going out. Rowing against currents can also be very difficult—even impossible. Many times, the crew was unable to make it back to the inlet because of these strong currents, and ended up on another part of the island on their way back in. Evidence indicates a port boat was assigned, most likely used to tow the sub back to the inlet when it was beached. Another worry was the amount of time the crew had in the submarine before running out of air and becoming asphyxiated. The air available to the men was minimized by the little space they had. A test was conducted to see how long the crew could last in the submarine measuring both physical and mental endurance. The Hunley was underwater for such a long period of time during the test that the marshal assumed no one made it. When the submarine resurfaced after a long two hours, there was only one crew member unable to make it out. During the last days of training, the crew most likely stayed at the battery rather than Mount Pleasant to spare their exhaustion. The men needed to save as much of their strength as possible before leaving for the attack. By staying at the battery, Lt. Dixon was able to watch out for perfect weather conditions. Many people are aware of the ending of this story. The Hunley was able to successfully take down their target. The crew flashed a blue light from a magnesium lantern to the comrades to indicate their mission was successful and they were ready to return to Sullivan’s Island. Fires were stoked to guide the submarine on its way back, but the Hunley never made it back that fateful night. The submarine’s whereabouts were in question for over a century until 1995 when it was finally discovered. The submarine’s trajectory from Breach Inlet guided researchers to pinpoint an area of the ocean floor where it was most likely located. Some say Hurricane Hugo’s bulls-eye path may have moved things around enough to help researchers find the Hunley. It was not likely this really helped, but it kept researchers on their toes looking miles off Sullivan’s Island for the submarine. The sea holds so many secrets with its large and deep waters, but it finally gave this one up after 131 years. feature

31 www. ReadMPM. com | www.MountPl easantMagaz i ne. com | www.MountPl easantPodcas t . com Untold numbers of people have visited the Lowcountry with an eye toward enjoying the marshes, creeks and beautiful beaches. Luckily, there are great opportunities for fun both underneath and atop those welcoming waters. A good place to start is Carolina Dive Locker, the Lowcountry’s premier center for scuba, free diving and spearfishing. Conveniently located where Coleman turns into Ben Sawyer Boulevard, Carolina Dive Locker is an SSI Diamond and PADI accredited dive training center, offering certification classes among many other services. The Locker was founded by former U.S. Navy diver Jeff Eidenberger. A Michigan native, his passion for underwater exploration was spawned by the many lakes in his home state. He mastered scuba while in the service before becoming a certified hard hat diver. Eidenberg logged many hours exploring sub-surface wrecks, including the Civil War ironclad USS Monitor. Now he is eager to share his love with those willing to learn. The master diver quickly learned “many people have wanted to try scuba here and, if they liked it, they’ve gone on to earn the certifications that would allow them to dive at the most exotic and challenging spots in the world.” Eidenberger stressed that from a novice’s first dive to his or her highest certification, safety is the first rule. New divers are trained and tested in a controlled environment, currently a swimming pool.
