Mount Pleasant Magazine July/August 2022

11 www. ReadMPM. com | www.MountPl easantMagaz i ne. com | www.MountPl easantPodcas t . com It was 1980 and the population was about 3,400. It was probably one of the safest, if not the safest, places to live in the Charleston area, which was important to me because I was a single dad raising my son Drew. It was a beautiful time on the Isle of Palms. When we decided this issue of Mount Pleasant Magazine would feature the islands, it brought back fond memories of when Drew and I called Isle of Palms home. It was during that time I started to understand what makes the small patch of sand so special. The island is a wonderful place with a rich past that makes for great articles — ones like the piece on The Hunley, starting on page 27. The Hunley was launched from Breach Inlet, which is why the bridge that connects Sullivan’s Island to Isle of Palms is officially called The H.L. Hunley Bridge. You’ll also find an article on Isle of Palms’ first female mayor, Carmen Bunch, on page 25. You can then take a tour of an extensively remodeled island home as you flip to page 34. Moving onto page 41, there’s an article on the new Isle of Palms Chamber of Commerce, followed by a look at a new watering hole at the Wild Dunes Resort on page 46. We’ve spent a lot of time writing about these beloved islands. I believe the most extensive online collections of islands history articles on Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island are found at IsleofPalmsMagazine.com and SullivansIslandMagazine.com. While you’re visiting the digital versions of our island magazines, check out our island-focused podcasts. Listen to or watch recent podcast interviews with the current Isle of Palms mayor, Phillip Pounds, and past mayor, Jimmy Carroll. Also find an interview on Lowcountry Live with Katrina Limbach, the president of the new island chamber. For all podcast or Lowcountry Live segments that have an island focus visit IsleofPalmsPodcast.com. I can’t leave you without also giving a big shout out to the South Carolina women who came to our photo shoot at Boone Hall Plantation. We had a blast photographing these ladies for South Carolina Women in Real Estate and Charleston Women magazines. These women display levels of strength that makes the world a better place.
