The past two months have been an editorial adventure journeying from the newspaper world to the magazine world. The theme of this issue, which focuses on Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island, is very special to me, having spent much of my formative years as a journalist in Charleston reporting up and down these particular stretches of sand. Since becoming acquainted with the Lowcountry I’ve been fascinated with these two barrier islands and how starkly different they are despite their proximity. The islands offer distinct lifestyles and provide residents and visitors with unique experiences. In this issue, you will read about everything from the craze of pickleball and historical tales of a lighthouse to new faces who have assumed leadership positions at schools, recreation departments and World War II aircraft carriers. You will read a heartfelt tribute to an island historian and learn about a beloved police officer stepping down from his post after nearly three decades. Other features examine the praise for a legislator who invented the Palmetto State’s official dance and a local author with new stories to tell and big shoes to fill. As you thumb through the glossy pages of this issue it will become apparent just how much the islands have changed with the tide and evolved over time, highlighted recently by the revamping of a marina and the construction of a new fire department. What once were sleepy little beach towns are now vibrant isles of paradise that are blossoming with every ebb and flow. There is truly something for everyone inside this magazine. I hope you enjoy this July/August edition as much as the folks who poured their hearts and souls into these pages.
