Our East Cooper Neighbors THE CO-OP FROSÉ AND EATERY Jess Patterson, Owner Where do you live? We currently live downtown, but I’m originally from Evansville, Indiana. I’ve been in Charleston since 1996. What is your occupation? I own the Co-Op. The original concept started on Sullivan’s Island and was always a place for the islanders to grab some essentials without having to get off the island. We focus on fast breakfast items, gourmet sandwiches, and, of course, the frosé. What’s the coolest thing about your job? Some of the most fun I have is during the summers. Since we’ve had the business so long, a lot of the same college kids and high schoolers come back year after year. I enjoy interacting with them, seeing them graduate from college, moving onto their first jobs and basically turning into young adults. It’s neat to interact with the staff and see them grow up in front of your eyes. IZZY’S SCOOPS & SWEETS Isabelle (Izzy) Dymond and John Dymond, Co-Owners Where do you live? We live in Mount Pleasant. My husband and I moved here in the summer of 2019 from Atlanta. We always planned to retire here. We just got here about 10-12 years ahead of schedule. What’s your occupation? I am co-owner of Izzy’s Scoops & Sweets. I manage the shop and operations. My husband John comes in on nights and weekends; he’s the bookkeeper and he keeps me straight. What’s the coolest thing about your job? My most favorite thing is when the children come in and they’re yelling “Miss Izzy and Mr. Izzy” and they give us hugs. They’re always so happy to be here and have their ice cream or desserts. Having kids literally jumping up and down and skipping through the shop is the most rewarding part of the job. PORT CITY MOPED Jordan Chaplin, Owner/Operator Where do you live? I’m a Charlestonian born and raised, and I currently live on James Island. What do you do? I’m the owner of Port City Moped on Isle of Palms. When I opened the shop in 2012, I learned that my great-great-grandfather opened the first Schwann bicycle dealership in Charleston back in 1912. It somehow went hand in hand that I opened a similar business 100 years later. What do you like to do in your free time? My wife and our son like to go out on the boat to the sandbars, take afternoon golf cart rides, look for shark teeth on the beach and eat out and try new restaurants. I really enjoy Long Island Cafe, Acme and Papí’s. We haven’t been yet, but I’m looking forward to trying Coda del Pesce. What’s cool about your job? It’s laid back in a sense because people are on island time when they visit. We try to make the best experience for them, highlighting the perks of the island. But the coolest part is seeing how much fun people have when they come here. They’ll tell me it’s the best part of their trip.
