93 www.ReadMPM.com | www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.MountPleasantPodcast.com As summer brings warmer weather and outdoor activities, protecting your skin from harmful sun rays becomes imperative. Board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon Dr. Gabriella Vasile shared essential tips to keep your skin safe, healthy and youthful during this sunny season. Vasile emphasized the importance of year-round sun protection, especially during the summer months when outdoor exposure increases. To shield your skin effectively, it’s crucial to avoid prolonged sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun’s rays are strongest. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, ideally SPF 50-plus and remember to reapply every two hours or as directed. Accessories like hats, sunglasses and sun-protective clothing are also vital for additional protection, as UV rays can penetrate even while you’re in the car. Understanding that any form of tan indicates cell damage is key. Sunburn isn’t the only concern; any tan signifies skin damage. Being mindful of your sun exposure habits can help minimize the risks of both skin cancer and premature aging. When it comes to treating sun damage, Vasile recommended retinoids as a potent topical solution. These agents boost collagen production and address various signs of sun damage, such as dark spots and uneven texture. Regular use of retinoids can rejuvenate sun-damaged skin and improve overall skin health significantly. In addition to preventive measures and treatments, Vasile stressed the importance of annual skin checks by a dermatologist. Monitoring any changes in skin lesions, such as enlargement, irregular shape, multiple colors, nonhealing wounds or bleeding is crucial for early detection of potential skin cancer. By incorporating these expert tips into your skincare routine and staying vigilant about sun protection and skin health, you can enjoy the summer months while keeping your skin safe, radiant and resilient against sun damage.
