That first breath of warm, fresh air and the first longer stretch of daylight move us to change our lives. And if spring can inspire us, that probably explains why I take the March/April issue of Mount Pleasant Magazine so seriously. As one of our favorite editions all year, the rest of the staff and I take care to fill it with content that will, we hope, encourage you to seize the day, face a long-standing fear and come out on the other side triumphant. Most of us have feared something before experiencing it and then ended up loving it, wondering why we were ever afraid. One example for me was walking the Ravenel Bridge. I’m scared of heights, and I figured my fear would be aggravated to the point of anxiety if I set foot on that elegant beast. Fortunately, I was incorrect, and it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Now, when I hoof it to the top of those spires and look down over Charleston and Mount Pleasant, there’s no word for the feeling. Our cover photo is one of the many love letters to the season in this issue. Captured by Rick Walo, one of our loyal photographers, it beckons us to have an adventure on water, one of the quintessential ways to celebrate the Lowcountry. Besides sailing, there are other fun ways to conquer your fears that you might consider after thumbing through this issue. How about participating in the Cooper River Bridge Run for the first time? Or exploring a new coastal town by yourself? Or letting go of your Hitchcockian nightmares and visiting The Center for Birds of Prey? Or buying that investment property, financial risk be damned? Or running for office?! Don’t miss Lowcountry Cuisine and North Mount Pleasant in this issue, two of our custom publications that will certainly be talked about more than ever in 2018. Both of these publications debuted prior to this issue but are larger than life this spring. My new Lowcountry Cuisine co-editor, Krysta Chapman, is excited to help us develop a magazine that shows the true flavors of Charleston. And as Mount Pleasant continues to develop, the area north of the IOP Connector is a hotbed of new adventure. As for me, I have my own ideas about this year, starting with working on a nonfiction book of essays and hopefully bringing a manuscript to a creative nonfiction conference. I’m certainly facing my fears, sharing the truth of my life on a page for all to see. But springtime demands that I shed old worries and move into a better future. See y’all there. Yours, Denise K.
