Watching readers pick up one of our magazines at a Harris Teeter or Publix, seeing engagement on our social media platforms or just knowing they want to contribute to our different communities is awesome. I’ve seen a lot of changes during my publishing career. Of course, the online element is by far the biggest change. For me, it’s also the best change that could have happened to an industry that dates back to 1440, when Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press. I love the fact he was in exile from Germany when he invented the commercial printing machine. He was productively creative with his time in exile. To me, it illustrates that the roots of publishing began with an independent mind looking for a way to communicate his message. I can relate. There is no better way to know if your message reaches your readers than seeing real- time interaction – and that’s what the online element of publishing does for the industry.
