C O M W hen the autumn leaves begin to fall, jeweler Mitch Embler’s thoughts don’t turn to football. They turn to Belgium. Each autumn, he and a trade group of fellow North American expert jewelers travel to Antwerp, the diamond capital of the world. In a mere two blocks of vendors, more diamonds are on display than even at New York City’s iconic Diamond District. Why spend a week or more in a foreign country every year for a retail business? Because that’s where Embler, owner of Embler’s Jewelers, can spot and purchase the finest diamonds money can buy. Or if a customer requests a specific size, shape and quality of diamond, he can comb the marketplace for the ideal stone. “Antwerp has been the world’s diamond center since the 1400s,” Embler said. “Most of the world’s diamond companies have showrooms there and many of the merchants have been in this business generation after generation.” Each trip, Embler compares hundreds, if not thousands, of diamonds, and ships the selected ones back to Mount Pleasant. “Some people buy just from a gemological report. But assessing a diamond isn’t a black and white science,” said Embler, and he should know. He’s been in the business of looking at diamonds for more than 30 years. “On paper, two diamonds may seem the same. To a trained eye, one is always whiter, more sparkling or simply prettier. That’s the one I buy for our customers.” Some customers place diamond orders with Embler before his yearly visit to Antwerp. Others are just delighted with the first-quality diamonds he and his wife, Kim, keep on hand. Shop at Embler’s Jewelers, located at 320-K, W. Coleman Blvd. or call 843-216-7349.
