We had rushed to find a home due to circumstances in our apartment and were exhausted by the process. We promised “one more house” and then planned to take a break. The final house was in a small, enclosed neighborhood in West Ashley, and a spur-of-the- moment visit at the behest of our real estate agent. My brother and sister-in-law had just arrived in town and my husband and I assured them we’d only be a few minutes. The moment I walked in the front door, I knew this home was it. When my husband entered a few minutes later, the rest of us greeted him: “Welcome home, Kyle!” We signed the papers that day. Kyle and I were newlyweds with a small budget and an even smaller amount of furniture, but we had a home. With the prodding of my husband, I put my writing skills to use and entered a contest for a home makeover and, incredibly, we won. We were featured on “Fix It or Finish It” where Antonio Sabado, Jr., along with a number of Charleston businesses, redesigned and furnished our entire living space. (To this day, friends still come by and ask to see the rooms!) Even with renovations, as any homeowner knows, the projects are endless to keep up a house. Painting, repairing, emergencies – in addition to paying the mortgage and never-ending cleaning. Rather than lamenting the burdens of homeownership, we celebrate the joys of our homes in this issue!
