The beginning doesn’t even start in this millennium but instead in summer 1990. I learned to read at 4 years old, the same year my parents divorced and the last summer we spent at our timeshare. I can remember my parents at the condo. The arguing ceased, and everything smelled like salt and Hawaiian Tropic. The Atlantic water was the perfect temperature, and it never rained. I had two forms of escapism embedding into me. I had the ocean, and I had my stories. I declared at age 6 I wanted to be a writer. I like humans. It doesn’t matter if I’m writing fiction or news. I dig the personalities. My love of the human voice is what chose the writing styles to which I would dedicate my life. I’m not a technical writer. I’m not in a cubicle with no air conditioning, writing grant letters for nonprofits (God bless ‘em). I’m here now, by the sea, learning about the other people who love what I love. I’ve written a lot: novels, articles, short fiction. I’ve succeeded and failed. I have awards and I have rejection letters. I also have knowledge of writer’s warfare from living in the trenches. I got the stir to do something more stable with all of that when my daughter was born. I felt the need to do something meaningful. I wanted to be with other creatives. More than anything, I wanted purpose. At the interview, I met someone who, like the sign on my shoe closet says, “lives with passion.” I could see arrows firing from creative points of origin and felt eager to direct them to the target. I was asked, “why now?” My “why” had to be important. It had to be passion. The fact that they required that of me won me. I am thrilled to be a part of Charleston Women and Mount Pleasant Magazine…a place by the ocean where words decorate pages and celebrate people. Our collective passion. My pursuit. -Lorna Hollifield Upcoming Managing Editor
