For the record, South Carolina did not invent the hammock, but Pawleys Island does have an affinity for hammocks due to its history. Rope-tied, cotton hammocks have been made on the island for more than a century, created by a riverboat captain named Joshua “Cap’n Josh” Ward in the late 1800s. Some say that’s where the nickname “Hammock Coast” originated.
