For Kat Bodkin and her family, this month carries profound significance, as they reflect on their journey with their 9-year-old son, Calhoun, affectionately called Cal. Cal, who is level 3 nonverbal on the autism spectrum, has not only shaped their lives but also transformed the hearts and minds of everyone he encounters. Cal’s story began to unfold when he was just 18 months old. Kat recalls the uncertainty and fear that accompanied his developmental milestones not being met. A routine check-up took an unexpected turn when a nurse gently suggested consulting a developmental pediatrician. “It was a scary time,” Kat remembered. “Everything seemed to happen so quickly.” The diagnosis brought clarity but also marked the start of navigating an often complex system of services and support. Organizations like the Arc of South Carolina proved to be invaluable for Kat and her husband, guiding them through the process and helping them access the resources Cal needed. Kat emphasized that many families remain unaware of such resources, underscoring the importance of early screenings and connecting parents to available support networks. Despite the challenges, Cal radiates joy and warmth. His parents describe him as a happy, resilient child who surprises them daily. Recently, the family embarked on a trip to Disney World, a dream destination for Cal, who adores Mickey Mouse. It was a journey filled with hope but also apprehension. Would the sensory overload be too much? Would the crowds overwhelm him? Yet to their delight, Disney’s commitment to inclusivity ensured that Cal had the time of his life. “It was a big risk, but it was so worth it,” Kat shared. “Cal was unphased by the things around him and just soaked in the magic of it all.” Moments like these highlight the extraordinary ways Cal impacts those around him. Whether it’s his beaming smile or his ability to find joy in life’s simplest pleasures, Cal brings out the best in people. Neighbors adore him, often stopping to greet him and share a moment of connection. In a world that can often feel disconnected, Cal’s presence fosters unity and compassion. “He helps others understand inclusivity,” Kat said. “People are drawn to him and it’s like they instinctively want to meet him where he is.” Cal’s influence extends beyond his immediate community. Within his family, he has been a catalyst for Limitless Celebrating Autism Awareness Month BY CARI LAWSON health and wellness The Bodkin Family.
