Learn their top picks for where to go, what to do and why they suggest that Mount Pleasant is the place to be. BEN-JAMIN TOY On Purpose Adventures founder, Nature Adventures co-owner, Cohesion Culture co-founder For Ben-Jamin Toy, the best parts of living in Mount Pleasant include, “The abundance of nature and the constant invitation to be outdoors. Personally, I prefer the marsh to the beach. You can often find me trail running in I’On or Laurel Hill County Park, walking the Shem Creek boardwalk or heading down to the Pitt Street Bridge. I also enjoy kayaking, paddleboarding and playing pickleball in the Old Village.” He added, “March and April, along with September and October, are my favorite months here. The weather is perfect – not too hot, not too cold – all you need is a light jacket.” Toy had this advice for anyone who is thinking of moving to Mount Pleasant. “If you have children or will be commuting, I recommend visiting for at least a week outside of the summer season to get a true feel for the area. I’ve lived in the Charleston area for 20 years across four different regions and I believe there is a perfect fit for everyone somewhere in Charleston County.” JENI RONE BECKER Owner of Sea Star Arts Photography Over the last 25 years since Jeni Rone Becker has lived in Mount Pleasant, she’s enjoyed the town for its beauty and convenience to downtown and the beach. During this time of year, she and her son Luke love walking the dog at the Pitt Street Bridge and on Sullivan’s Island. In the spring, they spend lots of time at Palmetto Islands County Park, too. She said, “Our town is full of unique events, outdoor parks, waterfront venues and a beautiful park right under the bridge. We have neighborhoods of all shapes and sizes, all within a short drive to the ocean. It’s like living at a resort full-time.” T.D. MCMURRY Owner of Eponymous Elevated Everyday Men’s Store T.D. McMurry said, “The thing I love most about living in Mount Pleasant is the simplicity of it all. Whether you want a chill beach day or a killer meal, you can find it within a 10-minute drive. And my kids are able to grow up with a childhood that feels very similar to the one I had in the 90’s.” In his spare time in March and April, McMurry enjoys spending early mornings on Sullivan’s, attending outdoor shows at The Refinery and afternoons dining in the restaurants along Shem Creek. He added, “Also, afternoon drinks at Old Village Wine Shop, when people are strolling by, hit a little better with the extra sunshine.” For someone who is thinking about moving to Mount Pleasant, he said, “Do it, and don’t look back! There are so many great neighborhoods, each with easy access to restaurants, parks and beaches. Find a place you love and make it happen.” East Cooper Neighbors BY SARAH ROSE To recommend an interesting neighbor in our community, contact Editor@MountPleasantMagazine.com.
