Mount Pleasant Magazine May/June 2018
15 www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.ILoveMountPleasant.com | www.BestOfMP.com from the editor M ore than six years ago, I was working for a book publisher when my boss placed the very first issue of Mount Pleasant Magazine on my desk. “Look,” he said. “Mount Pleasant has its own magazine now!” He had a hunch I would be interested, and he was right. Six months later, an ad on Craigslist changed my destiny. Mount Pleasant Magazine needed a managing editor! I made it my unwavering mission to get hired – I decided I was perfect for the job. A few phone calls, writing samples and an in-person interview later, I was hired, much to my triumph. I’d never been a magazine editor before, but I was eager to learn everything. Sure enough, within months, I was part of the magazine family, learning the ropes and loving my job. The rest, as they say, is history. Mount Pleasant Magazine has been publishing the family issue for several years, and I think 2018 is our best yet. With a front cover full of love photographed by Jenn Cady, both this photo and our key features showcase what it means to be someone’s family. Pictured from left to right are Robin Moses, daughter Rachel Jones and Rachel’s stepfather, Gary Moses; plus Mina Moultrie and her grandson A.J. Elsewhere in this issue, Mount Pleasant’s blood runs thicker than water. Don’t miss Brian Sherman’s feature on the iconic Phillips Community; Stephanie Shieder’s roundup of local businesses that have lasted through the generations; Mike Gibbons’ piece on how the work of East Cooper artists ends up on our walls; or Kalene McCort’s article about one man’s passion for the time-honored tradition of making sweetgrass baskets. Our May/June edition also includes this year’s Lowcountry Women In Business , one of the most popular of our specialty magazines, as well as its supplement, CharlestonWomen In Real Estate. You’ll applaud these ladies for their successes – and note how well they balance work, family and dreams for the future. My time at Mount Pleasant Magazine has been spent with another kind of family: the folks I have had the pleasure of working with every issue. From contributing writers and photographers to my fellow office workers, the last six years have been filled with shared triumphs, challenges and laughs. Of course you, our loyal readers, are also part of the Mount Pleasant Magazine family. I’ve been honored to bring you the many tales of East Cooper’s past, present and future. In fact, since I first moved to the Lowcountry as a 24-year-old graduate student, I’ve been connected somehow to Mount Pleasant. I’ve either worked here, lived here or both for the entire 14 years I’ve been in this area. So I know that even after this final issue as your editor and my departure fromMount Pleasant, I’ll continue to be connected to this town. Like many of you, I consider it home. Yours, Denise K.
