Mount Pleasant Magazine May/June 2019

That’s exactly what happened with this issue of Mount Pleasant Magazine. When I learned that May/June was the annual family issue, I knew there would be no shortage of heartwarming stories to home in on within the East Cooper community. I was scrolling through Facebook one day and spotted a photo of my friends’ baby boy, Ben. He was propped up on his 11-year-old golden retriever. I knew Ben absolutely loved his golden retrievers Piper and Alice, so I reached out to Anna Claire (his mom) because I had an idea — to do a feature on babies and dogs and the special bonds they share. She of course agreed, and I cast my net further on Facebook looking for more of these “baby-and-dog” bonds. The response was amazing. One of these responses led me to Kelly Greer and her sweet family (featured on the front cover and story on page 40). Talking with her about her adopted twins’ bond with her golden retriever, Bandit, who has a terminal condition, and her recent book launch benefiting dogs in need — I knew there was a deeper story to uncover about the Greers, and it was my pleasure to get to know them a little better. Another response led to a great connection in the Mount Pleasant community: Erin DiNicola, FIT4MOM owner and instructor, army wife, mom to four children and dog mom to a German shepherd puppy and a 2-year-old mixed-breed dog. I knew from our talk that she was a busy lady — and an inspiration for all moms and soon-to-be moms to never compromise health. … And that your child/baby can even be part of your workout. I had the pleasure this issue of meeting and reading about some truly inspiring individuals. The families in here are strong. … But that doesn’t mean they haven’t faced hardships along the way; they just addressed them the best they could, persevered and remained as positive as possible. Sometimes, finding that silver lining in even the lowest of our situations is all we can do — it’s critical. That’s what keeps us going, keeps our little worlds turning and makes our families stronger than ever.
