He was a star of Dirty Jobs, The Amazing Race, a Darius Rucker video and more. But what we remember most about him was his beautiful attitude and beautiful smile. My sisters and I had a charmed childhood, growing up in a fishing family. We visited and ate on many vessels growing up including tanker ships, dredges and tugs. My husband was in the USCG, and we lived in Buffalo, NewYork and Pensacola, Florida, and we met people in both cities that knew of my father and theWinds of Fortune. Dad could tell the best fishing stories and taught me to appreciate our maritime heritage and culture through the tales he would weave. One of my most exciting memories was when we traveled toWashington to lobby against imported shrimp. The trip took three days and my dad hated to fly, but he did it for his comrades. We visited about 10 congressmen and senators, including JoeWilson and Henry Brown, and spoke about how imports were putting his fellow fishermen out of business and describedmany of the losses the fishing industry was facing at the time. My dadwas a goodman who rose early with hope and dedication, then labored an honest day’s work in true grit fashion. He was never false in his commitment to the very real, very important ideal of participating in a historic industry that contributes both to a local community and to a family heritage. He loved his town and this community loved him. If he could have lived anywhere in the world, he would have chosen Mount Pleasant over and over again. This was made evident with the outpouring of community support my family witnessed after his death. He never thought of himself as a leader — and yet he continuously led by example. His simple, humble, loving affinity for everyone is something we should all aspire to. I love you, Daddy!
