11 www. ReadMPM. com | www.MountPl easantMagaz i ne. com | www.MountPl easantPodcas t . com I always feel obliged to explain why we call this edition of the magazine our family issue. Since Mother’s Day falls in May, and Father’s Day in June, we think it’s our perfect opportunity to pay tribute to Mount Pleasant’s wonderful families. I’m of the belief that the essence of a vibrant community starts with strong families. It’s clear that this is one of the strengths of our town. Whether it’s fathers who step up to make family dinners while Mom runs her new business, brothers and sisters helping younger siblings with homework or twins dancing alongside one another on the team Mom coaches— Mount Pleasant families are about teamwork and quality time. While shooting this front cover, I was able to spend one-on-one time with some of Mount Pleasant’s families that enjoy sports together. In the spirit of highlighting quality time, our cover story features parents who coach their own children. As I watched the interaction between these parents and their kids— the way the children looked at Mom or Dad as a guide, or for direction— I was able to experience the connection between them. It was a truly wonderful day; everyone was having fun and there was a lot of positivity. I feel the cover photo shoot exemplifies how Mount Pleasant is a home to many caring moms and dads, the ones who understand the mission to lead their children in exciting ways. I was surrounded by parents who had helped their sons and daughters find their own personal passions. These parents all found the joy of coaching in being able to watch the enthusiasm, growth and love the kids had for their activity. For me, it was a fun way to help bring the final touches to our family edition. The people brought it to life. 13 www. ReadMPM. com | www.MountPl easantMagaz i ne. com | www.MountPl easantPodcas t . com editor’s note In getting this issue of Mount Pleasant Magazine out, I’ve gotten to know people in so many different facets. Our family issue allows us to see community leaders through a unique lens when we might not get the chance to otherwise. It seems that colleagues know us at work, friends know us out on the town and family knows us at 6 a.m., trying to get out the door. Jeff at the office doesn’t know that Suzy loves to make her grandmother’s famous pecan pancakes for her twins. The twins don’t know that there was a time Suzy ate sushi with her girlfriends every Thursday night. Nobody knows Suzy runs a 200-page spreadsheet seamlessly, which keeps her entire company running. Everyone sees the view from where they sit. However, the family issue gifts us the chance to see from multiple vantage points, the way we all wish we could be seen all the time. In our features of “Families That Work,” you’ll get to look behind the curtain at people in your own backyard, and maybe see them in a different light. I’ve been a wife and writer for a long time. Now I’m the mother of 16-month-old baby girl and the managing editor of a magazine. People know me as that stuff…the main dinner party talking points. However, there are places where I’m still the former Friday night cheerleader rooting for the Jets or the daughter who used to try to make her dad laugh by dancing wildly while he was on business calls. Some people know me as the aunt who watches “Dr. Pimple Popper” with them or the girl who pours pickle juice on her chicken salad. It is human to want to be known, praised during the good and supported during the bad. That’s what this issue is about — it’s about really knowing the community. It is about relating to and inspiring one another. It is about intimacy with those with whom you live, work and play. And as someone who wears a whole lot of hats, I get it. To be seen, as a whole person, is everything. -Lorna Hollifield Managing Editor SCAN • CLICK SUBSCRIBE YOUR COMMUNITY, YOUR MAGAZINE MAY/JUNE 2022 C A L E N D A R O F E V E N T S • S M I L I N G F A C E S • O U T S T A N D I N G M O M S & D A D S Summertime Sips Wines for WarmWeather 0

14 www. ReadMPM. com | www.MountPl easantMagaz i ne. com | www.MountPl easantPodcas t . com about the cover The May/June issue of Mount Pleasant Magazine is the family issue. Not only do Mother’s Day and Father’s Day fall within this time frame, but also graduations, weddings and sporting events. It is truly a season for family. We wanted to make sure that the cover showed real Mount Pleasant families spending time together. Many parents coach their children’s sports teams. It’s the perfect way to get a little time in together between work, school, dinner and bedtime. It’s also a way for the parent and athlete to share an equally enjoyed passion together. That camaraderie was evident even while we shot the pictures. The kids beamed with pride, showing off their uniforms and talents, while the parents proudly doted over their little superstars in the making. Check out the full story on page 32! It is a conservatory, an enormous 9,127 acres boasting a collection of figurative sculpture, a 250-acre botanical garden and a zoo full of animals indigenous to the area. It is a place for preservation and peace, where the native flora and wildlife of South Carolina reign proudly. With a calendar full of exciting events and a second-to-none setting, it’s also the perfect place to get away for the day. This is a slice of our coastline that is tucked away from the ado, a sanctuary for all living things. It’s a place to become like one of the statues peeping out from behind a blooming magnolia tree or like a doe just passing through the brush—an ethereal hideaway. Brookgreen Gardens is beautiful on any day, but some of the coming summer events offer prime times to visit the grounds. Summer Light: Art by Night is an amazing display of light-art installations and music that takes place after hours. On Wednesday and Saturday nights only, May 11 through August 13, the botanical gardens are set aglow to create a unique aesthetic for guests to enjoy. A host of different bands plays at each event, while many options for food and beverages will be available. This is an art show unlike any other in the Lowcountry and a chance to experience technology and nature in a brand-new way. Another event to check out is the Brookgreen Gardens Art Festival, June 4-5. Both national and regional artists and craftsmen will exhibit their talents during the weekend showcase. Patrons can browse through collections of paintings, sculpture, fabric art, pottery, glassware and more during the two-day event. This is a great place to add to your own collection or get an off-season start on holiday shopping for the most unique and meaningful gifts. These events only add to the wonder of Brookgreen Gardens. If you aren’t able to make some of the mentioned dates, there’s still a ton to experience. With the arboretum, three art galleries, research facility and Keepsakes gift shop at your disposal, there is always something to explore at the gardens. These attractions, decorated by the works of over 425 artists and Mother Nature herself, promise an excursion filled with the wander and respite we all need just a little more of in our hurried lives. Maybe that why it’s all smiles, dancing and warm-season leisure every Friday evening at the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina from May to July. How could it not be? The weekly party that features a variety of music, food and top-notch cocktails takes place at the tip of Patriots Point, just into Mount Pleasant territory, where salty breezes and sunsets are born. There’s arguably no better setting either side of the Ravenel. The resort’s website states, “The comfortable, nautically inspired décor blends perfectly with the lush private beachfront overlooking the Charleston Harbor and downtown skyline. You’ll love the captivating sunsets over the harbor and soaking in the picturesque views of the Holy City.” According to Rick Carmean, general manager of event sponsor 105.5 The Bridge, families have been adoring the natural stage and fun-filled festivities for a long time. Rick stated, “People who were coming 21 years ago when all this started are still coming, and now they’re bringing their kids with them. It’s convenient, it’s beautiful, and it’s a lot of fun.” The small entry fee, amazing sponsors — Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina, 105.5 The Bridge and Ear for Music — and family-friendly feel are the things that have kept patrons flocking to Party at the Point for more than two decades. This year, the party starts on May 6 and wraps up on July 8. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time online or at the gate prior to the event. The resort is located at 20 Patriots Point Road in Mount Pleasant, where plenty of free parking spots can be found along neighboring roads. If you plan on partaking in the host of beers, wines and cocktails available for purchase, you’ll be happy to learn about the easily accessible Lyft and Uber pick-up and drop-off stations. MAM: We’re elated to announce that “Search for Treasure” received a starred review by Kirkus, calling it “exciting, tender, and absolutely wonderful.” “Search for Treasure” is the sequel to our middle grade book, The Islanders, which debuted last year at #2 on The New York Times bestseller list. In this volume, 12-year-old Jake is back on Dewees Island for another summer with his grandmother. He is excited that his dad will also be on island as he recovers from his war injuries. They must get used to a new normal, which isn’t easy. His dad discovered treasure coins as a child and stored them in an old tree fort on the island. Jake believes that if he can find that old tree, maybe his dad will be happy again. AM: As a middle grade book, “Search for Treasure” is marketed to children ages 8 to 12. We wrote it as a book that families will enjoy together. Whether you’re 8 or 98, this series is something everyone can enjoy. 2. You have worked together for a while. Has it become a family dynamic? MAM: My office is in my home, and Angela makes a weekly visit. Not only do my husband and I know her well, (and yes, she’s even seen us in our pajamas), my children and grandchildren know her well. Even my dogs love her! Angela is not just someone I work with. She is a best friend. AM: Mary Alice and I have been working together for more than a decade and have experienced so much. We have a level of trust that bonds us like family. She’s celebrated my personal milestones and the births of my kids. She even delivered meals when my father passed. 3. What is your favorite thing about working together? MAM: Angela has an ear for the 10 and 11-year-old voice because she’s immersed in it with her children. She brings up the best ideas when we’re writing. AM: We feed off each other’s energy. I believe that our different experiences, stages of life and skill sets enhance our work together in ways that I wouldn’t have predicted when we first started our book series. 4. What’s next for you two? MAM: We’re happy to tell you there will be a third book in The Islanders series. We can’t reveal any details yet, except that we’re already working on it. Look for it in 2023. 5. Where can we get a copy? 33 www. ReadMPM. com | www.MountPl easantMagaz i ne. com | www.MountPl easantPodcas t . com BY J ENNY HARR I SON Coaches mean a lot to children as they grow up. These adults are often their first mentors and role models. That bond is even more unique when the coach also happens to be Mom or Dad. Four families in Mount Pleasant show just what it means to lead their kids both at home and at the game. Fritz Miller, head coach of the competitive U/12 girls’ soccer team at Cainhoy Soccer Club, coached his 15-yearold daughter Amelia for seven years, and has been coaching his 12-year-old daughter Karlie for six years. A former competitive youth player, Fritz was thrilled to see his daughters take a liking to soccer. “Coaching my children has been one of the most rewarding experiences a father could have with his kids,” he said. “The most rewarding aspect of coaching your own child is seeing their progression and development through making mistakes and working hard to get better.” Although finding the fine line between coach and parent is often challenging, Fritz reminds himself to be patient and just enjoy watching his children learn from their mishaps. “Kids are under so much pressure from all directions,” he said. “But what’s most important is that they have fun and develop.” Unlike Fritz, who grew up playing his favorite game, Christine Zamboki found herself amid a brand-new adventure. When the Isle of Palms Recreation Center reached out to parents in need of volunteers to coach youth basketball, Christine stepped into the role of head coach and volunteered her husband Pete as assistant of feature Kar l i e Mi l l er Fr i t z Mi l l er wi th U-12 gi r l s team Photo prov i ded. Despite having never played basketball in a formal setting, Christine grew up a Chicago Bulls fan, playing pick-up games with family and friends. However, she admitted she was a bit hesitant to volunteer as coach in these uncharted waters. “When it was finalized that I would be a head coach for basketball, I was excited and full of nerves,” she shared. During moments of doubt, Christine felt inspired by Beecher’s former coach, Keaton Mims, also a working mom of young children. She explained, “For me, it was inspiring to have a female mom head coach, and this really paved the way for me for this current season.” Christine noted that when her husband expressed his own concerns with their combined lack of experience, she reminded him that kids are asked to do new things all the time. She is certain her family will look back on this experience proudly, as one for the memory book. To parents considering coaching, Christine advised, “When in doubt, try it out. You will never regret stepping up for your child or other children.” Another coach passionate about the game of basketball is Sean Kershaw, who leads Rock Nation’s 5th graders. The former player who proudly represented Lower Richland High in uniform before moving on to play at South Carolina State enjoys sharing his deep love for the game with his own son. “Basketball saved my life,” Sean admitted. “Once I started playing, I started thinking about the future. I would hear other guys talk about going onto college, and for the first time, I wanted that. I realized I had options.” He introduced his son to the game that inspired him early on, knowing that it would not only teach his child fundamentals of the game, but lessons in leadership. However, the best part is spending time together and watching his son grow. He added, “Watching my son improve is the neatest part…that and knowing I could be the difference in another kid’s life, too.” People tend to think of coaches like the last few feature Beecher Zambok i Photo by Mar k S ta f f Photography.
