General dentists diagnose, treat and manage overall oral health care needs, including gum care, root canals, fillings, crowns and more. Most general dentists receive three or more years of undergraduate studies plus four years of dental school to obtain DDS, Doctor of Dental Surgery, or DMD, Doctor of Dental Medicine, designations. Board-certified dentists are accredited through the American Board of General Dentistry’s voluntary examination process, which validates their knowledge, skill and experience. Per the American Board of General Dentistry, “Board certification signifies the pinnacle of achievement in general dentistry and is an individual credential beyond any other in general dentistry.” Founded in 1929 as the first specialty board in dentistry, The American Board of Orthodontics is a global leader in orthodontic board certification and sets the standards of care for excellence in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. Its goal is to promote excellence in orthodontic care through ongoing education, certification and professional collaboration. The American Board of Dental Specialties is a similar independent organization. Its goal is to encourage the development of specialty dentistry through recognition of specialty certifying boards, focus on quality care and protection of the public. This board recognizes the specialties covered under the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry, the American Board of Oral Medicine, the American Board of Orofacial Pain and the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology. When receiving dental care from a board-certified dentist, orthodontist or dental specialist, patients can be certain their care reflects the highest quality oral health care and the most ethical, evidence-based approach, no matter their age, diagnosis or treatment. Because fear of the dentist is quite common, patients’ peace of mind is paramount, as is their confidence in their provider’s ability to deliver the best treatment. 1 0 9 R I VE R L AND I NG DR I VE , SU I T E 1 CLUVE R P SYCH IATR I C .
