We all come from somewhere, and so far, no humans have just spontaneously appeared. Those families come in all shapes, sizes and situations. However, if someone asked a random person to draw a picture of a family, it might be a perfectly healthy mom, dad, daughter and son. Fido might make the cut, too. Though that archetype is often the picture of family we have in our heads, they actually look like all kinds of things. Every type of family puzzle imaginable is present right here in Mount Pleasant. In this issue, we found it appropriate to focus on some of those great families that make our town a wonderful place to call home. So many families have someone with some type of special needs in the mix. In talking to people I know, almost everyone has a brother or a cousin or a step-sister or a nephew who’s built or thinks a little bit differently because of his or her genetic makeup or health. These families are often underrepresented in everyday culture, but they are enormously present. Where is the child on the spectrum, in a wheelchair or with a hearing aid in that mental picture we all have? Recently, Mount Pleasant — on both governmental and private levels — has made more efforts than ever to become a truly inclusive city. Town officials, businesses and nonprofit organizations are working together to draw these families in, and we’ve featured those efforts in these pages. We have also included fun articles about families finding balance in unique work situations, busting the boredom this summer and walking through history by discovering descendants of notable residents. We’ve even dug up some history on the first planned neighborhood in the sea of so many that exist now. There is literally something inside for everyone. As I write that sentence, I think not of just this publication, but of the town it represents. When driving past the Mount Pleasant sign on I-526 or crossing the Ravenel into East Cooper territory, I think that is truer than ever before. There is, indeed, something inside for everyone. -Lorna Hollifield Managing Editor is a proud member of MARCH/APRIL 2023 T H E C O N V E R S A T I O N C O N T I N U E S O N M O U N T P L E A S A N T P O D C A S T .
