What do you do for fun when you have free time? How would you describe Charleston to someone wanting to move here? LISA THOMAS Owner of Out of Hand and Ooh! Events My favorite aspects of living in the Lowcountry are the hundreds of little things that dovetail into this amazing place, starting with the great restaurants, good shopping, beaches, history, lots of events and of course the people! Plus, the pace of life here can be slower or more deliberate, depending on how you want to spend your time. In fact, one of the first things I noticed when I moved here 30-plus years ago is how the skies are blue nearly every day, and taking time to appreciate the sunshine makes me smile. In my spare time, I enjoy renovations, gardening, curating collections, hunting antiques and creating just about anything. I’ve also gotten back to jewelry making, which is my therapy and learning to paint is next on the list! Overall, with its blend of beauty, personality and culture, Charleston is full of life, and we are mere caretakers of her. We need to give back as much as we take so that future generations can continue to enjoy this slice of heaven. DANA ROMANOSKY Co-founder of Evolve Modern Pilates and Pilates teacher My favorite aspect of living here in the Lowcountry is that there is always so much to do and the proximity to the water as well as our magical city of Charleston is so convenient. In our spare time, our family enjoys going to the beach, hunting for shark teeth on Drum Island or taking the boat out to go water skiing and tubing all day, before heading downtown to enjoy a world-class meal. On weekend mornings, my husband and I also like to take our chocolate lab, Kona, swimming at the beach on Sullivan’s Island. Living in the Lowcountry is wonderful, too, because the Mount Pleasant community has been so welcoming and supportive of us. VLADIA SPENCER Principal/creative director of Stylee PR Consultancy What initially drew me to the Lowcountry two decades ago was the blend of historic charm and modern culture, thriving culinary and art scene and healthy active lifestyle, set against the scenic natural beaches of our barrier islands. However, what truly anchors me to our region is the warmth and support of the local community. In our spare time, my family and I love meeting friends at so many of the local events, and we also like to get outdoors by exploring biking and hiking trails in the national forest, taking road trips up and down the coast or being on the water. As Charleston is well known for its laid-back, welcoming Southern hospitality, it’s been very easy to find friends and network. Over the years, I have been fortunate to make great friendships with diverse local and international residents and I have received a lot of support from our thriving business community.
