112 www.ReadMPM.com | www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.MountPleasantPodcast.com For the family issue of Mount Pleasant Magazine, I asked our neighbors east of the Cooper to answer the following questions: What are your favorite things to do or places to go with family in Mount Pleasant during the summer? What makes Mount Pleasant a family-friendly place to live? And, how do you and your family stay cool on the hottest days? SHAUNA MCTEAGUE Aunt and caregiver Shauna McTeague, aunt and caregiver to her nieces Emma and Catherine, said, “We spend a lot of time at the pool. I try to take the kids to the park in the mornings before it gets too hot. My girls constantly beg me to go to the water park, so I try to find times when it won’t be overwhelmingly busy.” “We love how family-friendly Mount Pleasant is. The library system is wonderful and we take advantage of their programs all year long, but especially in the summer. There are also a lot of kid-friendly restaurants and many wonderful parks.” McTeague shared. “To stay cool on hot days, we often go to the pool. This year we are looking forward to the opening of the updated Waterfront Park, which will include a splash pad. Some days though, we have to stay inside due to the heat. We build a lot of Lego sets and I have purchased escape room games to play inside the house. During the summer, we always have something fun to do to keep the girls entertained,” McTeague added. COREY ALSTON Sweetgrass basket artisan Sweetgrass basket artisan Corey Alston said, “Mount Pleasant has some of the best restaurants, schools and neighbors. During the summer, my family and I are most likely to be found visiting Shem Creek, beaches and historical places.” “The food, live music and atmosphere found here definitely have the vibes for all ages. You’re not doing yourself any justice to avoid the history of any areas that you’re visiting or living in, either. Mount Pleasant is rich with interesting historic sites that are must-sees. Take a few educational days for the family; you won’t regret it. When finished, hit the beaches to cool off,” Alston shared. “On the hottest days, our family and friends pick the hours when it’s wise to come outdoors or stay inside. Most Southerners dislike winters so it’s not likely in the summer to hear us complaining that it’s too hot,” Alston added. DR. JOELLE NEULANDER Professor and head of The Citadel’s Department of History Joelle Neulander added, “There are so many places to go on a nature walk, including Palmetto Islands County Park, which has a water sprayer at the playground for a cool stop before a swing. We also love the butterfly and marsh trail near the water treatment plant. And of course there is the boardwalk at Shem Creek!” “We love living in a place where everyone is walking and biking around the neighborhood, and our daughter can say hello to so many friendly people,” Neulander shared. “After a hot day outside, nothing is better than a quick evening trip to Jeni’s or Baskin Robbins for a cold ice cream!” Neulander added.
