Mount Pleasant Magazine Nov/Dec 2019
15 www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.BestOfMP.com | www.ReadMPM.com T his is the time of year people think most about those in need: the homeless and hungry, the families who need toys for their children or the elderly who have no family to see during the holidays. My heart fills with joy knowing people are giving and kind in November and December. But those less fortunate have the same needs all year long. The wish for open hearts and wallets is not seasonal. Many in the Lowcountry hospitality industry make a habit of giving all year long, but you wouldn’t know it if you didn’t ask. Like Saltwater Cowboys’ Wade Boals and Brett Yearout. If George Roberts from East Cooper Meals on Wheels hadn’t mentioned that Wade and Brett have been providing lunches for East Cooper Meals on Wheels for 14 years, I would have never known. As soon as George mentioned that, I knew we had to share their story. Mickey Bakst, who manages Charleston Grill at Charleston Place, is known as one of the biggest hearts in Charleston’s food and beverage industry. Anne Shuler Toole, managing editor, visited with Andrew Carmines, founder of Shell Ring Oyster Company and general manager of Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks in Hilton Head. Through an annual seafood festival, Thanksgiving get-togethers and more, Andrew and his family have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local charities. Adam Kirby, chef and co-owner of Bistro 217, and Anne Del Bene Hardee, co-owner, give back to the Pawley’s Island community all year long. There are many more. We all need to follow the lead of these Lowcountry restauranteurs and others who help to build stronger communities by giving throughout the year. The neat thing is that many give anonymously and graciously.
