Mount Pleasant Magazine Nov/Dec 2020

11 www.ReadMPM.com | www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.VOICEofMPpodcast.com managing editor’s note I t feels like I’ve been waiting for winter to begin since March. This year has been a struggle for so many of us, but there’s something about the holiday season that makes all of the hardships fade away. Maybe it’s the smell of our favorite seasonal treats wafting through our homes or the chilly days that give us permission to cozy up on the couch. Maybe it’s the joyful music or the feeling you get when you find the perfect gift for someone you love. It’s hard not to find joy during the most wonderful time of the year. While I’ve been pining away for the bit of normalcy that is baking — and eating — way too many ginger cookies, it’s impossible to ignore the fact that the holidays are going to look a bit different this year. It’s easy to focus on the negative ways that the pandemic might affect our celebrations, but if I’ve learned anything from the trials of the past year, it’s that we need to embrace flexibility, find pleasure in stillness and live in the moment. I’m excited to take inspiration from Katherine Waters’ “Making Spirits Bright” on page 17 and create new traditions for my family, like driving around town on a hunt for the prettiest lights or leaving notes for our neighbors to let them know how much we enjoy their decorations. We’ll also be tackling a few home DIY projects to spruce up our space before festivities begin, with helpful tips from “Decorate of Renovate?” on page CW-28. I plan on spending some time alone to think about how I want the next year to look, motivated by my own article on “Setting Realistic Goals,” page 19. And, of course, I’ll be shaking up some of the Cocktail Bandits’ delicious concoctions, found on page CW-8, for very merry evenings at home. As we enter into uncharted holiday territory, my hope is that we find happiness in mailboxes full of greeting cards, bringing cheer to our neighbors and indulging in an extra cookie or two for those who can’t be with us.
