A big part of that task is telling about the lives of Mount Pleasant residents who came before us or were gone too soon. By capturing these personal tales about their daily lives, we get a better understanding of how Mount Pleasant was shaped. After all, the past is somewhat a blueprint for the future. That said, we’ve been writing about people who shaped us for decades, first as East Cooper Magazine and now as Mount Pleasant Magazine. In past issues, we’ve featured local icons such as Gov. Jim Edwards; Isle of Palms Mayor Carmen Bunch; Mount Pleasant Mayors Francis Coleman, Harry M. Hallman, Jr. and Billy Swails; Boone Hall proprietor and community advocate Willie McRae; Tony Page who helped Willie run Boone Hall before he and his family opened Pages Okra Grill; United States Rep. Tommy Hartnett; Educational Leader Lucy Beckham; Bridge Run Director Julian Smith; and the list goes on. In this issue, we are honoring Captain Wayne Magwood and his family, beginning with the front cover. When reading Wayne Magwood’s daughters’ reflections, their grief is unmistakable, but their words also radiate with joy and pride. We are honored to share their thoughts and their stories about their father, beginning on page 22. And since we couldn’t tell these stories without making Shem Creek part of the conversation, visit page 28 for some Shem Creek history. Another icon who shaped Mount Pleasant is Lucy Beckham, an educational pioneer. Writer Pamela Jouan took a tour of the new Lucy Beckham High School, and the video now lives on at www.VOICEofMP.com .
