Sometimes, they’re less-than-positive. However, let’s look at what some of our northern neighbors have brought to the Lowcountry throughout the years. Take a short drive north to Georgetown County and you’ll find Atalaya Castle. Constructed in the early 1930s, Atalaya was the winter retreat of New York residents Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington. Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet is home to many of works of art including featured pieces by Anna Hyatt Huntington. In 1936, another New York resident, Henry Luce, publisher of Time, Life and Sports Illustrated magazines, purchased 3,000 acres in Berkeley County for a retreat and hunting lodge. A portion of this property is now home to Mepkin Abbey, a working monastery that is home to Trappist monks. I feel our northern neighbors have helped to bring some history, style and adventure to our coast. Yes, it includes growth, and some of our readers would label it as too much. I prefer to look at the positives that come with sharing our little pocket of the world with new residents. I would like to challenge you to focus on the blessings of living in this place that we call “home.” Take time to soak in the sights, smells, sounds that are South Carolina’s coast. As a friend recently commented while enjoying lunch along Shem Creek…“it’s like we live in a post card.” This is one of the reasons the Carolina coast is growing so much. Remember: we have control of our state of mind, we need to use that control to preserve our culture and lifestyle, no matter how much we grow. We need to take our lead from Darius Rucker as he says: “In my heart I’m always there, where they drink sweet tea, and they raise you to be polite, no changin’ who I am, no matter what state I’m in, I’m in a Southern state of mind”.
