13 www.ReadMPM.com | www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.MountPleasantPodcast.com Because our community is rooted in the twin pillars of faith and family, I’ve wanted to create a cover like the one you are holding or digitally viewing for a long time. And while every issue of Mount Pleasant Magazine is special to me, this 2024 holiday edition has been one of the most exciting for me to publish as I felt it was important to feature an array of Mount Pleasant’s religious leaders within its pages. As I couldn’t ask our religious leaders to meet at a local church or synagogue to take the cover photo, I approached General Manager Jim Westerhold and Director of Marketing Rick Benthall at Boone Hall, and I am grateful that they both wholeheartedly embraced the idea of using their Avenue of Oaks as our backdrop. And honestly, y’all, I could hardly contain my excitement as we gathered to capture this epic photo. To have finally brought this vision to life and to share it with you is a dream come true for me. Meanwhile, I do have a confession to make. I do not wear my religion on my sleeve, nor do I go to church every Sunday. But every morning I remind myself to start the day with a heart full of grace and respect for humanity, while embracing and celebrating the life full of gifts and passions that I’ve been blessed with. So no matter what your beliefs are, or how you choose to worship, I hope you’ll enjoy this issue with our beautiful cover image and the story of how our community values supporting one another across all walks of life, as much as I’ve loved every step of the journey to bring this concept to fruition. 15 www.ReadMPM.com | www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.MountPleasantPodcast.com Hope. I find this word to be synonymous with the holidays for many reasons. Holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas fill our bellies with joy and our stockings with gifts, but that’s not what the season is all about. It’s a time to fill our hearts with thankfulness and gratitude; now that’s sustenance. Our Holiday Issue is overflowing with hope in every story starting with our cover. When is the last time you’ve seen religious leaders from all denominations congregate? The logistics of this photoshoot was like pulling teeth, but when it came to fruition all of us were smiling because we realized what we had just accomplished. We brought the community together despite the differences in our beliefs. We quite literally found common ground at Boone Hall’s Avenue of Oaks. If that doesn’t make you a believer, then perhaps the philanthropy from our local nonprofits will rekindle the faith in your holiday spirit. Hope is the greatest gift of all that you can offer someone and a perfect example of that is the Hurricane Helene relief efforts for our neighbors in Asheville, North Carolina. I’m proud to say that Mount Pleasant Magazine played a direct role in helping those impacted by serving as a drop-off site for donations. Times of crisis such as these show just how generous and selfless our community truly is. Kudos to all who contributed. Before you begin to feast with family and friends or unwrap that shiny new toy you’ve been asking Santa for, take time to reflect and think about the underserved and less fortunate among us. The real magic occurs when we share our blessings with others to help them get through the holidays. No one complained though, as we were all too busy discussing the effects of Hurricane Helene and how we planned to help those in need. As such, this meeting of local religious leaders was more than a photo op, sending a bold message that no matter what denomination or set of beliefs, spirituality is a quintessential foundation of our community. We hope this issue provides clarity to your true convictions this holiday season. This isn’t a punchline, the following events actually did happen: a priest, a few pastors and preachers, a bishop and a rabbi walked onto the set of our front cover photoshoot under the picturesque Avenue of Oaks at Boone Hall. Styled by our ever so talented photographer Mark Staff, our Holiday Issue feature story “All Walks of Faith” came together with the help of some divine intervention. Behind the scenes, the morning light dappled through the historic oak trees draped in Spanish moss and two deer bolted across the sandy road while a couple of horses lazed adjacently in the sun-washed pasture. Meanwhile, a tractor pulling a covered wagon full of tourists sent up a dust cloud as a backdrop. A box of varietal donuts, contributed to our set as usual by editor Zach Giroux, rested on a nearby bench, to which our digital consultant Allyah Harrar’s dog Russ was tethered. When Russ tugged a little too hard on the leash, the bench, crowded with staff equipment and several water bottles, toppled over, sending everything flying. Fortunately, no donuts were harmed in the mishap. 28 www.ReadMPM.com | www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.MountPleasantPodcast.com Nestled in the heart of Mount Pleasant, Perspective Art Gallery has become a cherished hub for local artists and aspiring creatives. Since its inception in May 2017, the gallery has operated as a nonprofit driven by a heartfelt mission: to give back to the community and support the artistic growth of middle school students. Betsy Jones McDonald, a member of the gallery’s steering committee, has been there since the beginning. She has witnessed firsthand how the gallery’s nonprofit initiative has evolved from its initial focus on scholarships to a broader vision that empowers young artists. “Our mission is to ensure that all proceeds go back to the three middle schools in Mount Pleasant,” said McDonald. This commitment has allowed the gallery to provide funding for local art programs, helping students develop their creative potential. The gallery was founded thanks to a generous grant from the Mount Pleasant Artists Guild, who recognized the need for a space where artists could showcase their work. “We wanted to create a place that not only highlights exceptional art but also inspires the next generation,” McDonald shared. As sales have grown over the years, so has the gallery's ability to give back, further fueling its mission. Operating as a nonprofit is somewhat rare in the art world; only a small percentage of galleries follow this model. Another member of the steering committee, Anne Brownyard said, “We chose this path because we believe in the transformative power of art, especially for young minds.” Art With Heart Perspective Art Gallery BY ALLYAH HARRAR arts & entertainment

29 www.ReadMPM.com | www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.MountPleasantPodcast.com The gallery currently exhibits work from 34 talented artists, with a diverse range of mediums including oil, acrylic, watercolor, pen and ink and sculpture. Each artist contributes not only a portion of proceeds from their artwork, but also engages with the community, often creating art live during events, allowing guests to connect with the creators behind the art. In addition to exhibitions, Perspective Art Gallery hosts educational workshops and special events, making art accessible to all. Owner and ceramic artist Vanessa Steele created the concept of tracing his hand prints into stoneware clay. She sculpted them into a bowl, kiln fired the piece, glazed and stamped it with his name and the year as a meaningful bereavement treasure that would last forever. Thankfully, Henry survived his illness and is thriving today, as is Steele’s handprint bowl business. “The hand print bowls are completely customized,” Steele said. “They make wonderful gifts for everyone, whether siblings, babies or children's hands for a parent or grandparent, mother's or father's prints for a son or daughter or a student making one for a teacher. I am super sentimental, so I love making heirloom pieces of art that will be passed down from generation to generation. We can create anything and everything you can think of.” For convenience and to accommodate customers no matter where they are located, Steele said she accepts photographs of handprints by email at theartplacestudio@ gmail.com, which she uses to personalize each piece before shipping the individual bowls all over the world. 31 www.ReadMPM.com | www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.MountPleasantPodcast.com our town Harmony. It is something we think about this time of year between early European settlers and Native Americans as we gather for Thanksgiving, between God in heaven and man on earth at Christmas and Hanukkah and harmony with our neighbors when we look up from our phones. How is harmony possible in a town of 96,323 people? Human nature is so complex, at times irritating if we’re honest, and our town has undergone significant changes over the last couple of decades. If America is the great melting pot of the world, I think Mount Pleasant is a melting pot within America. We have long-term residents, natives and new neighborhoods comprised of people from a vast array of heritages and geographic origins in a community that has 14 Gullah Geechee Settlement Communities and 42,798 residences. Maintaining harmony is a big challenge that I’m reminded of every day that I enter the mayor’s office in town hall. But uniting as the Town of Mount Pleasant is not new to this community. Our progression of harmony goes back to our founding. In the beginning, what we now know as Mount Pleasant was once five villages: Greenwich Village (est. 1766), Hibben Ferry (est. 1770), Mount Pleasant Plantation (est. 1808), Hilliardsville (est. 1847) and Lucasville (est. 1850). So how do we preserve harmony now in the 21st century among so many residents? Shared values are the best place to start. Values like honor and respect always build harmonious towns, despite our individual differences. The cover of this month’s magazine is proof that we live this way in Mount Pleasant. Not long ago, when in the dark of night some out-of-town haters decided to leave anti-Semitic pamphlets in the driveways of our neighborhoods, our residents responded with overwhelming love and support and town council unanimously passed a hate crimes ordinance placing us among the leaders in the state on this issue. We have been recognized nationally by winning one of only 20 annual All-America City Awards based on our efforts to make our town and businesses friendly, welcoming and accommodating to families with members who have developmental and cognitive disabilities. Though the work of maintaining harmony is never finished, there are other signs that we are doing well. Statistics do not adequately capture the spirit of harmony, but they do indicate systemic health. In our most recently published annual report, we had an unemployment rate of 2.08%, a total of 6,989 businesses, our annual retail sales are about $2 billion and our hotel occupancy rate is 70.2%. In an economic sense, we are doing well. What about harmony with nature? Can we do well economically and ecologically? Natural beauty and our coastal environment rank at the top of the list of reasons why our area is so popular. The father of the American conservation movement, Aldo Leopold, said, “Conservation BY WILL HAYNIE MAYOR OF MOUNT PLEASANT Mayor’s Message Deck the halls with harmony

32 www.ReadMPM.com | www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.MountPleasantPodcast.com is a state of harmony between man and the land.” But is that possible in a bustling municipality that is surrounded on three sides by water and a national forest on the other? To protect our fragile marine ecosystem as well as our seafood industry, Mount Pleasant was the first major municipality in the state to pass a single-use plastic bag ban. We continue to spend tens of millions of dollars that will result in cleaner water by improving drainage and removing septic tanks. At this year’s statewide South Carolina 7 Resiliency Conference, we received the statewide award for Excellence in Conservation Leadership. Town council recently established our own funding mechanism using a 1 mill tax increase dedicated strictly for the purchase of green space. Our efforts to live in harmony with nature are being noticed. When I was growing up, Elton John recorded a wonderful song called “Harmony.” A line from it still resonates in my head: “Harmony and me, we’re pretty good company.” I think that resonates for our community, too, and we intend to keep working on it. our town Mount Pleasant Town Hall. On Sept. 19, an evening of celebration acknowledging the best businesses and professionals that Mount Pleasant has to offer, kicked off on the Hangar Bay of the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point. From the town’s local vendors and businesses to the wonderful people who make our community whole, what better way to recognize all that makes Mount Pleasant special than at our annual Best Of Party. As guests arrived, they were welcomed by a glamorous red carpet entrance, complete with professional photos by Valerie & Ed Photography, capturing them and their entourage. The party was nothing short of spectacular, from entertainment to a smorgasbord of food options which included a Lowcountry boil, oysters, charcuterie and other finger food delectables. 35 www.ReadMPM.com | www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.MountPleasantPodcast.com satisfied all night. Hamby Catering also wowed the crowd with their addictive deviled eggs and handmade cucumber and chicken salad sandwiches, adding a touch of elegance to the party’s culinary offerings. And what would a party be without some tunes? The music definitely provided the heartbeat of the party, thanks to the night’s dynamic duo of violinist Christie Bates and Seth Brown aka DJ B-Hustle. Together, they caused every guest to gravitate to just one place — the dance floor. Seriously, there wasn’t a single moment throughout the night that the dance floor wasn’t occupied. The unique blend of a live violin with classic DJ hits kept the energy high, with everyone joining in the merriment. As the night went on, sweet tooths developed, and Beanie Bakes and 26 Divine satisfied those confectionary cravings. Beanie Bakes exhibited their creativity around the venue by displaying their custom “Best Of Party” cookies, while 26 Divine provided a delightful assortment of homemade cookies and desserts that guests devoured. Carolina Cocktails, known for their premium beverage service, truly lived up to their reputation. Their handcrafted cocktails kept the party lively well into the night. Meanwhile, with Rappahannock Oyster Bar set up outside on the deck, guests were not only able to enjoy fresh oysters but also a stunning sunset, a perfect pairing. And what is a Charleston event without a taste of the Lowcountry? Port of Call offered an authentic Lowcountry boil, featuring locally-sourced ingredients and flavors that reminded everyone that we might just have the best food in the Lowcountry — at least we have a reason to believe so! The party didn’t stop with food and drinks. Lumber Jill’s added another element of excitement with their axe-throwing setup, encouraging some friendly competition and plenty of cheering as guests waited to see who would hit the bullseye. Along with some axethrowing fun, another popular activity of the night was the golf putting competition for a chance to win $25,000. While no one walked away with the grand prize, the competition brought everyone together for an entertaining, shared experience that greatly depicted the closeness of the Mount Pleasant community. The Best Of Mount Pleasant Party was more than just a celebration of local businesses; it was a reminder of the strong sense of community that makes Mount Pleasant a special place to live, work and play. With laughter, dancing and shared moments, this event reminded every attendee that it’s the amazing people that truly make this town what it is. A special thanks to our vendors for making this year’s party the best one to date! our town Photos by Valerie & Ed Photography.

36 www.ReadMPM.com | www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.MountPleasantPodcast.com As a small child growing up in Sunderland and Leeds, England, Yossi Refson watched how his father spread joy throughout his rabbinic .ministry and knew that one day he would follow this familiar path. When Refson came to the United States to study at rabbinic school in New York, he always imagined he would return to England. But when he met and married his wife, they decided to stay in America. In 2007, the Refsons moved to Mount Pleasant where they discovered there was a Jewish community searching for a hub. Working from home, the Refsons launched classes and programs and in 2016 they, along with friends from around town, built the Chabad of Charleston-Center for Jewish Life. There, according to Rabbi Refson, the mission is to find what the community wants and to make sure the Center serves those needs. “What makes Mount Pleasant such a special place,” the Rabbi said, “Is that Christianity has been so warm towards Judaism here. I’ve never experienced this level of connection, as if we are kin. We have been embraced by our non-Jewish neighbors, many who helped build the center. Some of the children who attend our preschool are not Jewish, but their families love our traditions. And after Oct. 7, so many church members have come to help by offering security groups to protect the Center. It’s wonderful that in Charleston, we are surrounded by people who respect our heritage.” “We encourage everyone to come to the table, unplug on a Sabbath by not looking at technology, blessing the food that we eat and studying the ancient mystical teachings and family traditions that our faith celebrates. All are welcome, conversion is not necessary to become part of the Jewish community.” The Rabbi explained that this time of year is significant because Chanukah is a celebration of when the Israeli Jews under Greek rule threw off the yoke of an oppressive regime that wouldn’t allow them to practice their religion. If Judaism had ended, the Rabbi added, Christianity would never exist. “Freely, publicly expressing gratitude for the freedom to celebrate our religion is even more special in Charleston where we have the annual menorah lighting in Marion Square, co-sponsored by the city with politicians All Walks of Faith Religious leaders shine diversity & inclusivity BY SARAH ROSE Editor’s Note: The following article is intended to show the strength of religious diversity and inclusivity across our community and how faith interconnects all of us regardless of differences in beliefs. A special thanks to St. Andrews Church, St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, Seacoast Church, Greater Goodwill AME Church, Chabad of Charleston, Mount Pleasant Presbyterian and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for participating in this feature.
