www.ReadMPM.com | www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.MountPleasantPodcast.com One of the things I love most about living in Mount Pleasant is how deeply people care about one another. That sense of community isn’t just a feeling — you see it in action every day. From neighbors lending a hand after a storm to volunteers showing up before sunrise to help at local events, there’s a generosity of spirit that truly defines our town. It’s this dedication to one another that makes Mount Pleasant such a special place to live. That’s why I’m especially proud to share our Local Nonprofit Directory (see Page 54) with you. This project has been close to my heart because it shines a spotlight on the incredible organizations that make a difference in the Lowcountry every single day. These nonprofits serve a wide range of needs — from feeding families, supporting children in their education, and protecting our beautiful waterways, to offering comfort and resources to those facing hardship. They are, without a doubt, the heartbeat of our community, quietly and tirelessly shaping lives for the better. My hope is that this directory inspires you to take part in these efforts in any way you can — whether through volunteering, donating, or simply learning more about the causes that resonate with you. Every small act of kindness contributes to the greater good, and when we all come together, Mount Pleasant becomes an even stronger, more connected place to call home. Thank you, as always, for being part of the Mount Pleasant Magazine family and for supporting the people and organizations that make our community so remarkable. Your involvement, no matter how big or small, helps sustain the spirit of giving that keeps our town thriving. 13 www.ReadMPM.com | www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.MountPleasantPodcast.com The greatest gift of all this holiday season is not something that can be easily found underneath the Christmas tree. It’s not shiny, it doesn’t have a price tag and it’s nonrefundable: time. This past October, I had the misfortune of losing my father. He was only 70 years old. Fortunately, he passed away in his sleep with no lingering pain and can now rest in peace eternally. We held a weeklong celebration at my family’s home; the same house that my father built years ago. Here’s an excerpt from his obituary that I had the distinct honor of writing. Keith’s happy place was working outdoors or in his workshop where all of his creations came to life. If he wasn’t building a house, a barn, cabinets, sawing lumber or chopping firewood, he could be found at his Florida house in The Villages, on the golf course, the Elks Club with his buddies where he was an Exalted Ruler or in the hot tub with a cold Coors Light in his hand. He approached life with patience and quiet strength. Keith was a hard worker by trade and an honest man by heart who set an example for others and always practiced what he preached. He was a simple kind of man with calloused hands and a sound mind. Out of all the beautiful things he ever built, Keith’s greatest masterpiece of all was his family. This holiday season, before we rush through shopping lists and party plans, let's pause to reflect on the true meaning of the season. Give your time to the people you from the editor The Greatest Gift of All love. Call someone just to hear their voice. Share a story that makes you laugh or cry. These ordinary moments may seem insignificant, but someday they will turn into special memories. In the end, the true magic of the holidays is found in the time we spend with those who matter most. If you’re lucky enough to still have time with that special someone, don’t waste a second. 15 www.ReadMPM.com | www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.MountPleasantPodcast.com about the cover As the holiday season bundles up with warm traditions, our cover serves as a simple yet powerful reminder of what truly matters. The essence of the season: generosity. While gifts may shimmer under trees and festive meals gather friends and family, the most meaningful offerings don’t come wrapped in ribbon. They come from the heart. A kind word, a warm smile, time spent with a neighbor or a helping hand to someone in need – these are the gifts that make the holidays unforgettable. This season, Mount Pleasant Magazine invites you to embrace the spirit of giving – not out of obligation, but from a place of deep gratitude. Generosity isn’t about how much we give, but how freely we give of ourselves. Whether it’s volunteering, supporting a local cause or simply being present for those we love, these acts of kindness weave the fabric of our community. The hands on our cover represent each one of us. The heart symbolizes the compassion we hold and share. In a world that often moves too fast, this season offers us the chance to slow down and give thanks for what we have while making time to give to others. As you celebrate this holiday season, may your days be full of joy, your heart full of gratitude and your hands full of generosity – the greatest gift of all. 30 www.ReadMPM.com | www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.MountPleasantPodcast.com BY ANNE TOOLE A Generational Gem History of the newly renovated Alhambra Hall Imagine Mount Pleasant before there was a bridge spanning the waters to downtown Charleston. It was a time of ferries plying across the harbor, bringing visitors to Mount Pleasant, where they could then take a trolley to Sullivan’s Island or beyond to the Isle of Palms. It was during this era, circa 1847, that the owners of Mount Pleasant Ferry Company purchased a grove of oaks in Hort’s Grove to develop a picnic ground. Articles paint a picture of a calm, shady retreat dotted with swings and note that a traveling carousel would occasionally visit. The owners ran a ferry from Charleston to the foot of Ferry Street to encourage visitors to enjoy the octagonal dancing pavilion, picnic grounds and small bowling alley. In 1929, the panoramic view from the picnic grounds forever changed when the Grace Memorial Bridge was built. The iconic bridge decimated the ferry industry, rendering many of the wharves and ferry buildings obsolete. An event hall was built in 1937 using timber from the abandoned Hog Island Ferry building and wharf. The historic charm of its gabled roof, wraparound porches, double staircase, vaulted ceiling and exposed rafters has remained largely unchanged, though renovations and

www.ReadMPM.com | www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.MountPleasantPodcast.com improvements have been made over the years. Today, the building and surrounding grounds and park known as Alhambra Hall are owned and managed by the Town of Mount Pleasant as a recreational facility. It serves as a backdrop for weddings, corporate and community meetings and more, averaging more than 160 events annually. On Aug. 27, the town reopened Alhambra Hall after a $4.8 million renovation that included a new roof and siding, energy-efficient windows, updated interiors and the addition of a large outdoor patio to support both indoor and outdoor gatherings. Major site improvements included new sidewalks, updated landscaping with a wetland buffer to protect the harbor and a new irrigation system across the Grand Lawn. Alhambra Hall is a special place to generations of residents, and its history also lives in the stories and memories of all who have enjoyed its amenities. If these walls, these lawns, these amazing sunsets could talk, they’d tell enough tales to fill a book. Mary Alice “June” Boensch taught children’s dance classes at Alhambra Hall, and her students, now in their 70s, remember her fondly. “Yes, she would hold recitals for the kids to be in, they’d be on a stage in the main room,” recalled her daughter-in-law, Sarah Boensch. Now 93, Sarah grew up next door to Alhambra Hall. She warmly recollected climbing the oak trees in the park and sewing dolls with her friends in the branches. They would wait for the tide to come in and then go swimming along the shoreline of Alhambra’s lawn. She loved watching the Moultrie High School basketball team practice and play games there. “They had basketball games inside of Alhambra Hall and practiced there after school because they didn’t have a gym. My friends and I would go over there and watch them, and sometimes they’d let us get on the court and pitch the balls. Sometimes the balls would hit the ceiling and get stuck in the rafters and they’d have to call time out,” she laughed. Sarah married her Moultrie High School sweetheart Dr. Frank Boensch, Mary Alice’s son, who grew up just down Pitt Street. Tales of first dates, first kisses and proms there date back at least to the 1940s, and surely for decades prior, with stories being lost to time and memory. It has become a coveted location for weddings, and even into the early 2000s, brides-to-be would camp out in line for a night or more for a chance to reserve their wedding date at Alhambra Hall. Some brides recall the town delivering pizzas to keep up the spirits of those waiting in line. The Teen Club met on Friday nights, and its live music and social scene made it the place to be for Mount Pleasant teens in the 1960s. Longtime residents have cherished memories of Little League Baseball on the baseball field that was located where the Grand Lawn is now between the building and the marsh. It was common for the balls to land in the pluff mud, and many a foot was cut on an oyster while attempting to retrieve them. Robert Hopkins recounted of his time on the field, “When my coach put me in the outfield, I had a great view of the shrimp boats coming and going.” Alhambra Hall has hosted Blessings of the Fleet, Children’s Day Festivals and other community events. Gymnastics and cotillion classes were held upstairs. “I remember taking dance classes there as a little kid and feeling like a ballerina on the hardwood floors,” recalled Kindal Boyle. Generations of birthday parties were held on the big concrete tables and countless childhood memories were made playing under the shady branches of the park’s live oaks. Alhambra Hall’s hallowed grounds have been entertaining and enchanting our community for nearly 180 years. Likewise its sweeping views and simple Lowcountry ambiance create special memories for generations past, present and future.

www.ReadMPM.com | www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.MountPleasantPodcast.com Veterans who served their country often maintain that service-oriented mindset after leaving the military and shift to serving their communities. As our nation celebrates Veterans Day on Nov. 11 and honors the heroes that protect our freedoms, we salute local veterans who volunteer their time and talents. Woody Caine served 26 years of active duty as a U.S. Army infantry officer. After retiring in 1992, Caine worked at Vanderbilt University overseeing a program in leadership and organizational effectiveness. He has been volunteering with the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum since moving to Charleston in 2014. Caine was chosen as the “Outstanding Volunteer of the Year” for 2019 at Patriots Point, where he spends an average of eight to 10 hours a week. As a Vietnam Veteran, he is located at the Vietnam Experience, an immersive exhibit where the theme is the Brown Water Navy operations in the Mekong Delta and throughout Vietnam. To Caine, the best part about volunteering is the people. “It’s meeting people and listening to their stories. For me, listening and learning from others is critical,” said Caine, who taught at universities for over 40 years and has a Ph.D. in social and organizational psychology. Besides Patriots Point, he has previously volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America, the American Heart Association and assisted various fundraising efforts like the Symphony Orchestra in Nashville. Caine served in scout leadership positions most of his adult life, including 22 years in Brentwood, Tennessee. “I believe in helping kids grow and develop and understand,” Caine stated. He tells Patriots Point visitors that this isn’t just about Vietnam or military service. “It’s about service to others. And that’s what drives me to be a volunteer, because I honestly believe that we need to encourage more active service to each other,” emphasized Caine. *** Victor Coachman served 21 years active duty in the Marines and taught Marine Corps JROTC for another 10. This is Coachman’s fourth year volunteering at Patriots Point, where he is a docent, welcoming people to the USS Yorktown and sharing some of its historical background. He is also one of the tour greeters. Coachman wears myriad community service hats. On Monday mornings he volunteers at the North Charleston VA Clinic on Rivers Avenue. He is also a member of Dorchester County’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Coachman and his fiancé Delores are passionate about feeding local homeless people and prepare around 3,000 hot meals annually. What started as a personal mission after he grew tired of watching homeless people get pushed aside has now officially become a recognized 501(c)3 charity called Circle of Love Charleston. Additionally, Coachman volunteers at Purpose, an adolescent group home in Summerville, where Circle of Love prepares homecooked meals for teenagers and staff the first Sunday of every month. He also mentors boys through Purpose’s new Manhood program. Furthermore, Coachman is a member of the Marine Corps League. “We do a lot of volunteer service to help veterans in the community,” he said. He’s also a member of the Montford Point Marine Association. Coachman grew up in Miami in an environment where the church was an integral part of the community. “The idea of serving and helping has always been ingrained in me,” he explained. “It’s in me to help folks and this is what I do.” *** Art Rooney, a Charleston native and retired major general who spent 35 years in the Air Force, has been volunteering with Patriots Point for just over a year now. The Summerville resident primarily helps visitors at the information desk as you enter the USS Yorktown, but he also drives around in a golf cart providing people with mobility issues assistance moving among the various exhibits. Rooney likes driving the golf cart and interacting with visitors, as well as sharing historical tidbits about the USS Yorktown. He loves pointing out that women, famously known as “Rosie the Riveters,” played a significant role in constructing “The Fighting Lady.” The ship was built in the early 1940s, at a time when most able-bodied men were off fighting in World War II. our town Victor Coachman, retired Marine.

www.ReadMPM.com | www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.MountPleasantPodcast.com Rooney also appreciates volunteering with fellow veterans and being around others who have served. Rooney and his wife volunteer with several charitable community organizations that support low-income families, including Hearts For Summerville, which assists youth in Summerville. Each week they prepare 30 snack bags for children. They also volunteer through their church Bethany United Methodist, where his wife oversees senior programs. Additionally, they have previously served as drivers for East Cooper Meals on Wheels. “It’s a way to give back,” said Rooney of his impetus to volunteer. “You feel a sense of accomplishment. When you see a smile on a kid’s face, it makes it all worthwhile.” *** Bill Casassa served in the Navy during the Vietnam era and later worked with the Navy in either defense contractor or civil service roles for the next 34 years. He retired in 2016, but he couldn’t just sit still and watch TV, so Casassa started volunteering at Patriots Point in 2017. “Usually I was on destroyers, or ‘small boys’ as they call them, so the Yorktown and (USS) Laffey tend to be very comfortable places for me,” recounted Casassa. Casassa helps guide guests around the Yorktown and answers questions about daily life on the ship. Like Rooney, he relishes volunteering with other like-minded veterans. Casassa also enjoys giving visitors a new perspective on military life. “So, Patriots Point was a good fit for me because I could not only bring my expertise of having been on these ships for some time to the public, I could also help the staff some. I’m old enough to remember some of these things on these ships when they were still sparkling and lighting up and stuff. So, we can look up an answer of what something did, and I can provide another background that says ‘well, here’s what it looked like, and here’s how people operated with it on the ship at the time.’” Casassa added of why he volunteers there: “It’s given me an outlet to assist them in some of the exhibits and things like that that are on the ship. But mostly it’s because it gives me an opportunity to give the Navy a ‘thank you’ for all they did for me.” our town Art Rooney, retired from the Air Force. Bill Casassa, retired from the Navy.

www.ReadMPM.com | www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.MountPleasantPodcast.com It’s all about business. Pamela Evette was preaching to the choir when she spoke at the Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce luncheon in August. From student apprenticeships to scholarships at technical colleges to an online database for youth employment and outreach targeting at-risk youth, South Carolina’s lieutenant governor connected the dots that impact businesses in the state. This was not Evette’s first visit across the Cooper River this summer. In July, she joined Mount Pleasant Mayor Will Haynie and others in the SC7 Expedition walk across the Ravenel Bridge, part of an endeavor to promote the state’s natural wonders and inspire people to protect them. Evette urged people to “get outside, enjoy all South Carolina has to offer and to do our part to keep our state strong, free and beautiful.” The granddaughter of Polish immigrants, Evette said she learned from an early age just how blessed she is to have been born here in the land of opportunity. As her life has unfolded, she has seen firsthand how determination and hard work can lead to success. From starting her own business to becoming lieutenant governor and now making her bid for governor, she believes that “God had a bigger dream for me than I could ever dream for myself.” An Ohio native, Evette earned a degree in accounting and began her career in business with a professional employer organization (PEO), a firm that enables companies to outsource administrative duties such as payroll, employee benefits and recruiting. She later became comptroller for the company. Little did she know then that one of her co-workers would later become her husband. She quipped, “We figured as long as we could work together, we could be married!” The two established their own PEO, Quality Business Solutions Inc., in Ohio and later opened an office in Strictly Business Lt. As a locally based, relationship-driven team, they understand the unique challenges Charleston families face when navigating care decisions. In this “Ask the Expert” segment, they answer real questions from local families, offering insight and clarity to help you make informed choices with confidence. Senior Resource Specialists WE HAVE SENIORS COVERED Question: Hi Joshua and Anne Marie, my dad is still independent and enjoys his home, but it’s becoming harder for him to keep up with everything. When should a senior consider moving into an Independent Living community instead of staying at home? Answer: That’s a great question — and one we hear often! Many seniors who want to remain independent find themselves overwhelmed by the responsibilities of homeownership — things like lawn care, maintenance, meal preparation, and even coordinating transportation. Independent Living communities allow residents to maintain their independence while removing those day-today burdens. These communities typically include meals, housekeeping, utilities, and activities all in one easy, predictable monthly cost. Beyond the convenience, many seniors also find that being around peers and engaging in social events adds a sense of purpose and connection they didn’t realize they were missing. It’s a wonderful option for those who value independence but want a simpler, more worry-free lifestyle. ASK THE EXPERT
