WAKEUP CAROLINA For families touched by addiction, the holidays can feel especially heavy. WakeUp Carolina exists to make sure no one has to walk that road alone. Founder Nanci Steadman Shipman lost her 19-year-old son to an overdose and has experienced the struggles of addiction that families face firsthand. Their mission to provide support, hope and community to others who are hurting is instrumental in their outreach. WakeUp Carolina offers a variety of support groups for young adults, caregivers, survivors, veterans and more. All services are free, and they’re always expanding their reach. They offer harm-reduction programs and lifesaving training that anyone can learn. On Nov. 20, they’re hosting their largest fundraiser of the year, the Giving Breakfast, at Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park. The event features restaurateurs and advocates and is open to the public. Proceeds go directly to keeping WakeUp Carolina’s programs free for families. Donations can also be made in honor of loved ones, including but not limited to those still fighting addiction or those lost too soon. It’s a way of ensuring families know they’re not alone.
