The enthusiasm fans have for their team is a vital part of the game. If you are a gambler, you probably contributed to the $4.5 billion Forbes reported was bet on Super Bowl 51 in 2017. One thing is certain: whether you have a heart for the Warriors, the Gamecocks, the Tigers or even the ultimate underdogs, the Philadelphia Eagles, you are about to embark on the season when things that don’t happen between the goal posts simply don’t matter much. For the past four years, we’ve been celebrating football season with what I consider to be some of our best covers – not including our “Best Of” covers, of course. It all started with Art Director Dana Coleman’s original art “Cock and Tiger” cover. Dana really outdid himself. The following year, he created a well-receivedClemson/Carolina player cover. Last year, we were fortunate enough to catch up with coaches Dabo Swinney andWill Muschamp for an awesome cover – hats off toDana, photographerThomas Runion and our previous editor, Denise K. James. After the coaches’ cover became a big hit, I kept asking myself: “How are we going to top this?” Well, here we are presenting the biggest fans both for Clemson and Carolina – their loyal and fun-filled cheerleading squads. I hope everyone enjoys this cover as much as our past September/October covers, along with Editor Helen Harris’ interviews with the cheerleading coaches at Clemson, Carolina, the College of Charleston, The Citadel and Charleston Southern. Helen not only wrote some great articles, but she also coordinated the photo shoots. Speaking of covers, I want to say thanks to Mayor Will Haynie for spending time with Jenn Cady and I at her studio. The cover of our annual MP Business magazine, page 81, is the result of time well-spent with creative people. Thanks, Jenn. If you haven’t heard, Mount Pleasant was honored with the All-America City Award for 2018. Private citizens, Mount Pleasant companies and the talented staff at Town Hall all worked together to claim the prestigious honor for the second time. If you love Mount Pleasant, then you’ll want to read Bill Farley’s article, which explains the kind of effort it takes to earn this award. (For our readers who love Bill Farley’s writing, you’ll be glad to know he just published his second novel, “Team Player.”) Thanks for reading our community magazine. I couldn’t imagine any better calling in life than telling the story of the town we all call home and of the people who help to make it a town we all love.
