Yes, I’m from the South, hailing from a small middle-Georgia town where Friday night lights were what everyone seemed to look forward to. From the early age of 6 or 7, I remember the highlight of my week being Friday night, so I could watch my sister and all her friends cheer, play with my friends in the big sand pile behind the bleachers … oh, and get all that good concession- stand food (candy). I am going somewhere here with my “dislike” of watching football before I offend too many fans. … because, despite never understanding the rules of the game or the profuse tears of joy or sadness after a victory or defeat, I always had fun. And when Bill told me he had this concept for the cover following last year’s issue of the coaches’ cover, I loved the idea and was ready to make it happen. I wanted to showcase the history, progress, skills and plans not only of Clemson and USC but of our local teams as well. Because for me, game-day culture starts with the cheerleaders and the fans they ignite in the stands. It somehow all trickles down to us nonbelievers who are just along for the good times (me). It’s a culture. And a fun one. This issue is a medley of all things fall and how to enjoy our community in the upcoming changing of seasons, and I hope we have kicked off your love of football, tailgates, festivals and all other kinds of fun with family and friends.
