15 www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.BestOfMP.com | www.ReadMPM.com T his is the time of year everyone starts celebrating their annual traditions, starting with pumpkin carvings and Halloween parties and heading into family gatherings around the table for Thanksgiving. Then, of course, just days after (and sometimes days before) Thanksgiving, we start to see long white beards, red suits and twinkling lights to symbolize the winter holidays. During these festive year-end celebrations, another kind of celebration often goes on— the victories of favorite football teams or, in some cases, heated discussions about why the defense or offense didn’t lead a team to victory. Our tradition here at Mount Pleasant Magazine is to bring you our football issue at this time of year, and our symbolic nod to the season of pigskin is our September/October cover. I’ve always believed publishing is a team sport, just like football. All year long, we brainstorm, we discuss how and when we will make the photo happen, and then we go for the “touchdown.” As some of you might know, the idea for annual football covers started in 2014 with Dana Coleman’s Tiger and Rooster original painting. He also painted the Clemson and Carolina helmets in 2016. But I feel our 2017 cover, featuring Coaches Swinney and Muschamp, was the one that emphasized our desire to keep doing something special with our September/October edition. The 2018 cover was another great one, particularly because we discovered that one of the Clemson cheerleaders our photographer, Thomas Runion, captured for the cover was from Mount Pleasant, having attended Wando High School. This year, our football cover speaks for itself — fun and energetic! To score this year’s image, managing editor Helen Harris coordinated the times to photograph fighting rooster Cocky and the ferocious Tiger. Our lead videographer and photographer Thomas Runion traveled to the designated locations to take the photos. And our art director, Dana Coleman, spent hours blending these two popular mascots together to create the perfect dynamic. We also have to give a shoutout to Andy Solomon, a friend of the Media Services family for 30-plus years. Decades ago, he penned articles for East Cooper Magazine , which preceded Mount Pleasant Magazine , and, for this issue, he contributed articles on the athletic directors of The Citadel, Clemson, USC and Charleston Southern as well as the cover story on school mascots for the aforementioned schools. He wrote: “They are the embodiment of a university’s ultimate ambassador,” which is true. We hope you feel “Team MPM” made a touchdown with our football cover and the September/October 2019 issue.
