The time when conversations all gravitate to who won what game and “Did you see that play, man? That was crazy!” and scoring those awesome tickets to that great game and yadda yadda yadda. My eyes glazed over a bit just writing that. It’s not a secret to those who know me that I don’t understand, or enjoy, watching football. But I can say that I appreciate the history and culture of the sport. So, with that in mind, here’s what I do enjoy: fall nights, being with friends, a drink in my hand while watching a halftime show, planning what dish to bring to a Superbowl party (and what outfit to wear), tailgates and road trips to games. I know I’m not alone in this sentiment. The culture of football is fun. So much so, that even if you don’t “like” watching the game, like me, you still have a good time. This issue is our annual football issue. We take this time to celebrate our local and statewide teams, along with their history and traditions. We had our talented writer Andy Solomon get the back story of the mascots at Clemson, Carolina, The Citadel and Charleston Southern. Next, Solomon delved into the backgrounds of the athletic directors at each of these respective schools. We all know collegiate athletes are born in their middle and high school years, and Bill Farley tackled this impressive aspect of our community, profiling impressive students from Oceanside Collegiate, Palmetto Christian Academy and Wando. Continuing on the track of school — welcome back! I hope everyone is getting back into the swing of things, and, if you’re finding the transition tough, maybe take a look at the “Back-to-School Routines” article written by Pamela Jouan, where she elaborates on how to optimize you and your child’s school-year schedules. The resources in this issue are many, and I could go on, but I’ll let you flip through for yourself. From vaping to the scoop on time change to boiled peanut recipes — you’ll find it all here. So, yes, flip on that Clemson/Carolina game, (but first, read about the history of their mascots!), invite your friends over, make some appetizers … and, if you get bored, you always have this magazine to read.
