Mount Pleasant Magazine Sept/Oct 2020
11 www.ReadMPM.com | www.MountPleasantMagazine.com | www.VOICEforMP.com editor’s note T onight I sat at the dinner table with my 1-½ -year-old daughter and husband, watching them do more playing than eating, and mulled over the same question I’d been revisiting all week. How would I, the new managing editor of Mount Pleasant Magazine, introduce myself to you, our dedicated readers? Telling someone about yourself in half a page isn’t easy, even for a writer. My resume alone could take up the entire Senior Living section — SL 4 to SL 22 – from Domino’s Pizza customer service representative to lifeguard, financial planner to wedding planner. I enjoy experiencing new things, exploring new places and dreaming up new ideas, and I firmly believe that when it comes to life experiences, more is more. Since I do only have half a page, I’ll give you the abbreviated version. I adore my family and can’t imagine two people I would rather be quarantined with, a theory that has been tested and proven. The three of us naturally end up outside whenever we get a chance, whether we’re swimming at Sullivan’s Island “kiddie pool,” planning a perfect picnic, like the article on page 52, or taking John Torsiello’s advice on page 26 and enjoying a fun family bike ride. My two office assistants, fluffy orange tabby cats named Max and Simon, do everything in their power to distract me during Zoom calls, from lounging on my keyboard to obstructing the camera. I’m sure those of you who submitted your favorite pets, featured on PETS 6, can relate. Even though I love fresh air, my ideal place is in the kitchen, and I’m excited for fall vegetables to begin popping up at our local farmers markets. I’m a proud member of the COVID Sourdough Bakers’ Club — though, truth be told, I checked out Ken Forkish’s “Flour, Water, Salt, Yeast” from the library two weeks before the stay-at-home order. I still have it. That’s me in half a page. Over the course of my time here, you’ll get to know me better. More importantly, I look forward to getting to know you, being part of your community and creating a magazine that you love to read. • Lindsay C. Bishop Managing Editor • editor@mountpleasantmagazine.com W e couldn’t be more excited to feature Mayor Haynie and his dog, Rusty, on this month’s cover. As soon as the mayor agreed to write his first-person account of the way the coronavirus has impacted Mount Pleasant, we looked forward to sharing it with you. On this cover, he and Rusty are relaxing on the piazza of a beautiful home, located at 179 East Shipyard Road, currently listed by Pam Bishop of Carolina One Real Estate. Owners Deborah and Gene embodied Southern hospitality, inviting us to their residence to capture this photo on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Read Mayor Haynie’s story on page 17.
