This issue is especially exciting, as we are honored to share Mayor Haynie’s story of what it has been like being mayor of Mount Pleasant during a pandemic. Our mayor provided an exclusive, first-person account of his journey, which you’ll find on page 17. This special story is proudly featured on this issue’s cover, and photographer Jenn Cady did a fantastic job of capturing Mayor Haynie and his dog, Rusty. We feel privileged to feature the mayor’s account, but I must admit that Anne Toole’s article about the courageous women who survived breast cancer is another highlight of this issue. Each year, in our September/October issue, we tell inspiring stories of women who overcame odds and beat this terrible disease. Their journeys, featured on page 41, are full of hope, courage and strength. This is also our annual pet issue, one of my personal favorites, which is why we asked the mayor to bring his pup along for the cover shoot. Discover why South Carolina has the coolest state dog, the Boykin spaniel, on page 57. My son, Anthony Macchio, also wrote an article about his journey to apply for a service dog, which you’ll find on page 69.
