I LoveMountPl easant . com W hen local music lover Dr. Lee Minton coordinated a single performance of classical music for his Pawleys Island community in 1991, he didn’t know he’d be building one of South Carolina’s largest fall attractions. This October, the Pawleys Island Festival of Art & Music celebrates its 30th year of bringing diverse musical events to Georgetown county. What started with humble beginnings is now a thriving nonprofit organization providing scholarships in the arts, community outreach and even music workshops for local high school students. Though Minton simply intended for that first show to delight the town for one night, the beloved festival now spans three weeks. This year, the festival highlights nine musical performances, beginning Oct. 8 and running through Oct. 23. With gospel, jazz and funk tunes to get your toes tapping, the event brings in Grammy award-winning musicians and acts, ranging from Motown harmonies to tributes to our favorite bands. Because the festival is known for bringing in big names like Pablo Cruise and The Marshall Tucker Band, tickets sell out quickly. After cancelling the event last year due to COVID-19, this year’s lineup opens with a bang, showcasing Orlando Transit Authority’s tribute to Chicago. Other performers include Atlanta Rhythm Section, Tavares and Black Market Trust. The concert series closes with an unbelievable show that you won’t want to miss: Best of the Eagles. Celebrations kick off with the Pawleys Island Wine and Food Gala on Oct. 7. All events take place at The Reserve Golf Club of Pawleys Island.
