Long before their names graced the headlines, women were rolling up their sleeves to build, lead and spark meaningful change right where it mattered most. Take the world of real estate. Women did not just join the industry; they helped transform it. In 1909, the trailblazing Susan Pringle Frost broke ground as Charleston’s first female real estate agent. Not stopping there, she went on to found the Preservation Society of Charleston in 1920 (then called The Society of the Preservation of Old Dwellings), proving that passion and community go hand in hand. Frost was also a suffragist who became the first president of the Charleston Equal Suffrage League. Later, the visionary Elizabeth Hanahan took things a step further by launching the first women-owned real estate agency, Elizabeth Hanahan Realty, opening doors for generations to come. That progress was hard-fought. Until 1974, a woman could not even secure a mortgage without a male co-signer. The Equal Credit Opportunity Act finally changed that, giving women the financial freedom to claim their own piece of the dream. Today, that vibrant spirit is stronger than ever. Women continue to establish thriving careers, launch powerhouse businesses and lift each other up every step of the way. They are weaving the fabric of our neighborhoods and paving a bright path forward. Celebrating women is not just about honoring our history, it is about getting excited for what we choose to build next.
