The Preschool of the Arts at the Center for Jewish Life opened in 2016 and offers a holistic and collaborative inquiry-based curricula program of specific learning tools and skills for our youngest residents. The preschool follows the Reggio Emilia approach, defined as using “Symbolic languages such as painting, sculpting and drama in everyday life. It was developed after World War II by psychologist Loris Malaguzzi and parents in the villages around Reggio Emilia, Italy, and derives its name from the city.” Acknowledging focus on the relationship of the fine arts to nature, science, math, music and communal interaction for children ranging in age from 18 months to 5 years in a nondenominational setting, Executive Director Rachel Lessard advised “Our preschool’s mission is to evoke wonder, creativity and joy.” Lessard continued, “The Preschool of the Arts was founded on the principle that children have an intrinsic desire to explore and are inherently capable and competent learners. … Children learn best when they are guided through the process of building meaningful understandings in a diverse community where their ideas and questions are honored and valued.” Lessard concluded, “Children are able to learn, grow, ask deep questions and express themselves through art and consistent interaction with nature, all through this intentional community school.” The Preschool of the Arts is located at Chabad of Charleston and the Low Country, tended by Rabbi Yossi Refson, at 477 Mathias Ferry Road in Mount Pleasant.
