The CCS campus features 30 acres of fields and trails for students hailing from Daniel Island, Mount Pleasant, Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms and Summerville. As the only co-educational, nonsectarian, independent school in the Charleston area, CCS provides its students with cutting- edge education. “Charleston Collegiate uses a project-based learning approach to education. It is a highly innovative, 21st century school that prepares students for an innovation economy,” said Jordan de Jong, CCS director of communications. The fully-accredited institution is organized as a lower school, middle school and upper school, educating students from preschool through 12th grade. With class sizes of around 14 and a dedicated staff, many who have advanced degrees, CCS’ focus is always on the students. De Jong explained that CCS values the whole student by emphasizing “student engagement, student ownership of their own learning, depth of content over breadth, student-centered classrooms and soft skills like communication, collaboration, problem-solving, resilience and teamwork.” CCS’ four pillars – project-based learning, financial literacy and entrepreneurship, leadership though outdoor education and fine arts and creativity – are shown through the variety of special subjects the school offers, including animation, introduction to computer programming, krav maga, personal finance, ecology, public speaking and more. The specialized education Charleston Collegiate offers produces the following ideals in its students: active citizenship, ownership of and a desire for lifelong learning, grit and perseverance, resilience, high ethical and moral standards and relationships both with peers and adults.
