His sibling, Eli Mitchell, a fifth grader, agreed: “The staff is nice, and I’ve noticed a few new things this year such as the Charleston chicken sandwich and a salad with chicken.” The consensus is a high positive for the Charleston chicken sandwich but a big thumb’s down on the quality of salads. In the eyes of many students, the lettuce simply isn’t fresh enough. “Cheesy bread is another new menu item, and it is very good,” said eighth grader Julia Shallo. “I believe we have a wide variety of food in our cafeteria, so I wouldn’t change the selection. As far as our cafeteria staff, I think they work very hard to keep everything in order and the cafeteria clean.” Middle schoolers Macey Brooks and Kaleigh Bosak have differing opinions on another new option. According to Macey, orange chicken is “super good,” while Kaleigh stated: “The chicken is not very good.” She added, however, that “the cafeteria has tried to add more options, and the pizza is good. I think the staff works very hard and is kind to the kids.” “Say! I like green eggs and ham! I do! I like them, Sam-I- Am!” - “Green Eggs and Ham,” by Dr. Seuss. Taylor Hamilton, the last eighth grader to give her opinion, said pizza is the dish she likes best. “Don’t make the kids take fruit because they aren’t going to eat it,” she advised. It’s important to note that some students declared they liked eating the fruit, proving that you cannot please everyone all of the time. Wings are another option some prefer and others felt could be left off of the menu altogether. The smoothies seem quite popular, as is the macaroni and cheese. Suggestions include expanding the types of soup offered with the hot lunches, especially on cold, wet Lowcountry days. Here are a few quick facts on the components of school lunches that are noted on the Berkeley County School District website: All milk is 1 percent fat or less. Four meal components are offered daily at breakfast and five meal components are offered daily at lunch. Lunches consist of two ounces of a meat or meat alternate, one-half cup of vegetables, one-half cup of fruit, one serving of grain and eight ounces of milk. Student meal prices vary by districts but average $1.40 for breakfast, $2.25 for lunch, $3.50 for premium lunch and 30 cents and 40 cents for reduced breakfast and lunch. “We not only teach Dance and Gymnastics – We will teach your child to soar.” Ranked as number 12 on the list of “Top 50 Dance Studios in the USA”, Tapio offers a unique combination of excellence, quality and state-of-the-art instruction.
