The blockade of Savannah was a success, effectively preventing the import and export goods for the Confederacy. Hilton Head became the transfer point for supplies and troops, including former male slaves conscripted into the Union Army. After the war, some of these men became landowners on Hilton Head. Gen. Ormsby Mitchel, concerned by the displacement of black people, began building the first town specifically for freedmen. Mitcheltown became home to about 1,500 people for the duration of the war. Over time, Mitchelville disappeared and the island reverted back to Nature. Former slaves created their own communities, where they eked out a living from the land and the bounty of the sea. In 1890, northerners invaded the south once again, not to make war but to fish and hunt. William P. Clyde of New York bought 9,000 acres on Hilton Head to use as a private hunting reserve, and, though the island was accessible only by water, it continued to be a popular destination. Hilton Head played a small role in World War I, when troops stationed at the former Union fort were assigned the task of watching for submarine attacks. Later, during World War II, Marines stationed at Camp McDougal paved the first road on the island, from the ferry landing to the lighthouse. Hilton Head’s modern era begins in the mid-20th century, when electricity was provided to the island’s 300 residents, courtesy of the Palmetto Electric Cooperative. A group of lumber associates–including Gen. Joseph B. Fraser– purchased 20,000 acres, built three lumber mills and formed the Hilton Head Company. When Fraser pulled out of the company in 1956, his son, Charles, purchased his interest and began developing Sea Pines Plantation.
